I think that it was Henry Jenkins the one who started this insanity (not the petition but the whole "S/U was made to discourage slash"). His review of the 2009 movie was like a summary of all the nonsense and cliché that fans said about this movie and Uhura in particular and I guess that some people started using his words as the word of God.
Some fans even claim that the writers actually admitted putting Spock with Uhura to discourage slash (since when het can discourage slash?) and yet no one can find this supposed interview where they had "admitted that". In fact, I can honestly say that the writers never said that.
Some fans give too much credit to themselves, I seriously doubt that the writers really give a shit about these things.
