Actually, one of the more popular theories I saw floating around about his ability to take away people's bending was that he was using chi-blocking techniques to block benders' chakras. A lot of his followers were chi-blockers, and there was no bending required in that case. Quite frankly, that still makes more sense to me than what turned out to be the reality. How can he take their bending away via bloodbending?

I don't think he's taking bending away through bloodbending. Just that you have to be a bender (of some flavor or other) to take bending away. Aang's not a bloodbender, but he could take bending away, after all. And he could bend perfectly well before he unblocked his chakras. So...yeah, I can go with this.

The thing I am kind of tripping over is that your spirit is supposed to have to be "unbendable" or else it can backfire on you. I suppose I can allow that he was entirely and genuinely committed to his mission, which is arguably unbendable in its way, but... Well, anyway, I am very surprised he was able to master that ability so completely.

This video makes me so uncomfortable. Just the whole concept of 5 people on one guitar. No personal space. *shudder*

As scrawny goes, he's not that scrawny. And some of us like that body type.

A friend showed me this photoshop tutorial the other day and I thought, "hey this is right up your alley"! Isn't it amazing what people can do with photoshop?

I think plus only allows ten posts to be tracked at a time and basic can't track at all but I'm having trouble finding the details.

if trollometer is trolling the secret-submitting trolls, who'll be trolling trollometer?

I agree, anon. I know that, from most people at least, this attitude comes from an admirable place - wanting to have a welcome, safe space for everyone. But what makes one person feel welcome may drive away other people, and I really feel that's what's going on in CP fandom.

There's a happy medium to be found, but they seem not the least bit interested in trying to achieve it. Sad, really.

Never mind the fact that one of the reasons he went to Cambridge, so he's said, was because people he knew kept telling him he wasn't smart enough to go there, and he wanted to prove them wrong. Speaking of people judging others completely wrong... @__@

(Anonymous) 2012-06-24 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I like you. I like you a lot, nonnie.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-24 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this is very possibly true. I come from a family where crying is...well, discouraged. As a teen, I tried not to cry at all, even when my dad was dying. I just felt like that's how I was supposed to act, stiff upper lip, all the time.

Then I got a little older. I saw that other people did not have the same anti-crying stance that my family did. And I found a movie that made me absolutely weep without fail. To my shock, believe me. Now I cry sometimes over movies. Certain specific movies can get me going, at least. Books pretty much never, tv so rarely I could probably count the times it's happened on both hands and have several fingers left over, music yes when I'm in the right mood. (Like ANY song can bring it on when I'm down enough. Even fucking bright and shiny happy songs. Which I find utterly bizarre, btw.)

Anyway. I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with NOT crying at media. I personally am never scared by horror flicks because I just never can believe that any of it's real, not even with a tiny sliver of my brain. They bore me. Your brain might just be like that about everything that brings on the tears in other people. Such is life.

Heck gets a happy ending though, and so will you.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-24 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I find wasting 9 pounds on something much harder to forgive than misogyny, too.

But there was no adultery. The woman never cheated, she just had feelings for the other woman, and she was honest with her husband about it. She never had sex outside of her marriage.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-24 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah. I was a big fan before the most recent hullabaloo and I very consciously noticed the misogyny in his books, and some old interviews. as a generally non-confrontational person, I kept my observations to myself, but in the end I am glad that when others caught wind of the same sentiments they found them objectionable.

I also don't like some of his attitude toward America, like we need to be defended by him. I'm glad he's not one of the many UK folks who complains about our language use all the time, but other times his attitudes about our culture come off as patronizing.

He was the first (of many, alas) celeb whose twittering managed to kill my love for them. All of the not nice stuff that's come out about him since then has only backed up and strengthened my impression of him.

Luckily it hasn't ruined Jeeves and Wooster for me (yet.) I'd have been pissed if it had.

sorry, i have nothing to contribute to this duscission

You know what, he'd make a pretty good Cardassian. He already looks kinda lizard-y (not saying this to bash his appearance, just a random thought).
