Oh he'd drive me absolutely bonkers if I knew him IRL, but admiring his preciousness from afar on Twitter is great.

(I'm convinced he used to be kind of a jerk though and is overcompensating now to make up for it... he talks a lot about forgiveness and judging people for who they are now, not who they were... it just strikes me as weird idk idk)

Or that whole "forgiveness and judging" people bit can come from the fact that when he was younger he was mugged by knife point. He said he was very angry not so much at his attacker but at himself for not doing anything. That sort of anger can eat at you. So I can see him trying to forgive his attacker as well as his younger self for not doing anything.

That's awful. I can totally sympathize with how victims end up feeling bad about themselves (especially in this culture we have where people like to be all "You should've done X, Y or Z" or "If it were me I would have..." etc etc victim-blaming nonsense).

Wow I didn't know that story. Might explain something. I also feel his education background might have something to do with it as well because he's very much an English cliche of what is considered "privileged" - went to Eton, first class degree from Cambridge and has managed to make his name in a career he enjoys. But he always comes across to me as feeling like he can't believe it's happening or he's lucky to be there. I'm not denying he genuinely feels that way but people do respond better to someone being humble than not. The thing is, his background shouldn't mean anything but it does to some people. I was involved in a discussion recently where a guy declared he hated Tom Hiddleston because he "went to Eton and Cambridge, posh fuck" and I just couldn't believe it. Yeah I met plenty of people who adhere to Cambridge stereotypes but I also met plenty of people at Cambridge who were educated in the state system who were also arseholes. I didn't get that guy's hatred based on something that's mostly unrelated to Tom's acting career.

Never mind the fact that one of the reasons he went to Cambridge, so he's said, was because people he knew kept telling him he wasn't smart enough to go there, and he wanted to prove them wrong. Speaking of people judging others completely wrong... @__@
