Actually, tattoos are becoming far more socially acceptable nowadays, and provided your fandom tats don't involve too many skulls or naked people, people probably won't assume that you're in some kind of gang or something.

(unless there's now fandom-based gangs - which would be a wacky kind of awesome)

. . . I now want to be part of a fandom-based gang :(

the idea of a fandom based gang cracks me up a little too much...

Leaf Tribe for life, yo!

That depends on where op lives. In more conservative areas, tattoos are still seen as a stereotypical sign of rebellion (along with piercings in anything other than the ear lobes) or gang affiliation.

Man, with fandom-based gangs ship wars would get REALLY intense!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-25 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
and the butthurt would reach epic proportions!

Instead of cutting off fingers when we screw up our gangster activities, we cut off an OTP. That way when a rival gang member looks at one of us, they'll go all, "OH MY GOD they have limited ships. That means they've concentrated extra energy into their remaining ones. I best be careful lest they make me also ship it D:"

"Fandom gangs."

Shipping wars just got way more hardcore.

I guess the closest we ever get are tinhat cults. I would have loved to see a turf war between the FF7 House and the Married To Snape On The Astral Plane folks. Hey, maybe there are all these fancult wars happening on the astral plane right now and us real-world-dwellers just don't know about it.

And they all swagger/dance around like the gangs in West Side Story!

I'm picturing boater-shaped tinhats being waved around...

I burned a Twilight book at a midnight screening in front of Twihards as a way to get into the Potterheads gang. I was inked that night. I now carry the Hogwarts crest on my left shoulder to show that I'm a "made" fan.

I don't know though, guys. Things have always been a bit tense when it came to Houses. Like, the self-proclaimed Slytherins tended to be asshats towards us all and the self-proclaimed Gryffindors tended to "lead" us around even if they weren't officially "made" yet. Ever since Pottermore began, people have become more loyal to their Houses than just our Potterheads gang. Our empire will soon fall and the Hunger-Gamers will reign over the fandom gangs.

ha ha ha ha ha

Also, I'm self-proclaimed Slytherin married to a self-proclaimed Hufflepuff. We've even had people at the grocery store remark on it when we're both wearing our house t-shirts. I am now thinking we need tats.

oh you :p

I would join a fandom-based gang in a heartbeat. East Side Femmeslashers for life!

Pretty much this.

Unless you're my dad, who thinks that anyone with tattoos or wearing black is ZOMG gang member. (I think having a goth daughter has cured him of this, somewhat, along with my comments that I have historically been safer in a group of goths and metalheads than I have been a group of Christian white men.)

... I apparently do not have a goth icon. Huh. This will have to do for now, but I must rectify this.
