Actually, tattoos are becoming far more socially acceptable nowadays, and provided your fandom tats don't involve too many skulls or naked people, people probably won't assume that you're in some kind of gang or something.

(unless there's now fandom-based gangs - which would be a wacky kind of awesome)

[personal profile] naturedichotomy 2012-06-24 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
. . . I now want to be part of a fandom-based gang :(

the idea of a fandom based gang cracks me up a little too much...

Do you want to be friends with people who only see you as a "tattooed chick"?

There's still a stigma but most of it afaik is directed at tattoos that are badly done or distasteful as opposed to good ones. Or ones that are awkward and on your face or something.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-24 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
...And that's why I am never getting a permanent tattoo.

I just consider if it looks good. If it's terrible, like a Betty Boop trace or the Coke logo on your ass for instance, that's about all I'll think of it and move on. Someone mentioned yesterday, tolerance is in.

Also, if assholes avoid you because they jump to conclusions, that's like a bonus; they've preemptively kept themselves, these assholes, away from you. I should get a set of sleeves or something. It'd be like asshole repellent. Of course, I'd have to wear long sleeves to every typical job interview ever >:/
the reality is that i want that second job just to afford said tattoos AUGH

Fuck the haters. If you like them, that's all that matters. You don't want to be around people like that anyway. There are ALWAYS going to be people who think it's "inappropriate" that women have tattoos (but funny enough, men catch FAR less flack for them), and who are out to shame and judge and pretend they're better than you.

And to that I say "go fuck yourselves", because I refuse to let the bastards win. The only person whose opinion matters is yours.

I don't know where you live, but I hardly see any social stigma against tattoos, nowdays.

Also, I don't really understand the need for acceptance and "desirability" from the main public.
Unless you're doing something that harms another, who cares what people think?

Maybe I'm just weird, but idk how anyone from the younger generation can sill view tattoos as socially unacceptable? Or maybe it's just because I hang around with so many tattooed people. I have none myself, but that's because I haven't found one that I want made, and I want to design it myself.

There's always going to be at least one person who thinks you're a freak, regardless of what you wear or look like. It's not "what if...?"; it should be "so what?".
Why would people try and make you feel bad anyway? It's not like you've done something wrong.

[personal profile] aylee 2012-06-24 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I suppose this depends on where you live. Yes, there are going to be some places where tattoos are still seen as horrible things that you should OMG NEVER DO to your body, but there are also places that are much more accepting, where you can walk down the street in summer and see that probably a good quarter or more of the people you pass have tattoos, and they're just normal, ordinary people.

Where I live, tattoos are just a normal part of life, plenty of people have them and love them.

I don't think you should be so worried about finding love, even though you're tattooed. If you really love them, then why would you want to be with someone who found them disgusting?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-24 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to work with a guy who kept telling me how terrible tattoos on women were. I figured out pretty quickly that it was his issue not mine. My tattoos are for me, what they represent is significant enough that I wanted to carry that reminder with me always, on the bad days they remind me that I have the strength to carry on. Other people's opinions don't change that meaning. Someone who is going to judge you for having tattoos was only going to judge you for something else if you didn't have them.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-24 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe if you didn't refer to yourself as a tattooed chick, people might take you more seriously. Do you regularly show off your tramp stamp? JFC...

Nothing wrong with having tattoos. Are you going to regret that fandom tattoo in 20 years? Fuck yes. But you want it now, so get it, and enjoy it. When you become secure with yourself, others will be.

I see nothing wrong with tattoos whatsoever, and I think reasonable people won't either. Even if they don't dig your particular tattoos...I don't get why they would assume anything negative about you because of them.

Of course people aren't always rational though, nor their feelings, so I'm not saying it doesn't happen...just that I think in today's society tattoos should be more acceptable and there shouldn't be as many unreasonable reactions to them.

In a way, I envy you. I LOVE tattoos on other people, but am a wuss and also know my interests change too often to considering getting anything permanently engraved on my skin.

Hahah, no worries. Most people either don't give a shit or think they're awesome (if they're well-done, of course). I have a pretty big Portal 2 tattoo and the worst I've gotten was "but you know that's permanent, right?" (You don't say!)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-24 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the problem with tattoos...not that there's something inherently bad about them in and of themselves, but that it's difficult to get rid of them if you change your mind later.

Hope you find a solution to your problem, OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-24 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have a problem with it. It's just that most fandom tats are so fugly and tacky looking.

I live in a very small town in the middle of Missouri. Half sleeve, full back. Mostly people say 'wow, that's beautiful!' and 'who did your tattoos?'

The only people who've ever given me shite about them were Xians and asshole guys, who really - i avoid those people anyway.

So quit worrying about it. Tattoos are *for you*, so fuck the haters.

I have a fandom tattoo, anon. It's not obvious, it's a symbol from a game I play. No one gets it. Which is kinda sad really. I never regretted getting it for one minute (but I've only had it for about a year or so now). However I am kinda of the mind that I will marry anyone who knows what it is without my telling them :P

All I can say is, just be happy with your bits of artwork and look for like minded people to enjoy them with!

Anyone know the best place to get a tattoo that won't get completely mutilated as I get older?

I want to get a tattoo, but I'm very sensitive to the idea that wherever I get it the tattoo might get all distorted and weird as I age. SO, I'm basically trying to figure out the part of my body that will probably change the least (for example, I haven't had any kids yet but I'm planning on it, so I figure no stomach/chest area tattoos).

Anyone who's had some tattoos for good while care to weigh in, or just have any general info?

Fuck those people. It's your body; if you're happy with them and they represent things you love, then that's all that matters. And if you exude confidence and contentment with your looks, then people will treat you accordingly. Some people will still be judgey and rude, probably, but who cares about them; just do your thang.

I'm never getting a tattoo. Not because I don't want people judging me for it, no, but because I know they hurt like hell and I am not very tolerable to pain at all.

Plus, my mother has a whole bunch of tattoos and I don't wanna follow her. She a kindergarten teacher, by the way.

... but I will never not think tattoos are tacky as hell. Does that make you socially unacceptable in my eyes? No, but it does mean I'll be sitting over here thinking about your bad taste. As for undesirable, well, if you mean from a purely aesthetic standpoint, then yes.

You remind me of somebody in my fandom, OP. I don't know if that's who you actually are or not- I'm guessing "not", because I'm not even sure if you go to this comm. But on the off chance you are:

You are an awesome, funny, really cool person, and you are pretty, and your tattoos are pretty. You are pretty much the best and how you put up with so much shit from stupid, entitled people, yet stay so positive with the fandom, is a complete mystery to me. I don't know if you're "socially acceptable," but hey, we love you a lot. And we're, to be honest, a bunch of bitter, melodramatic internet harpies. If we can like you, so can normal people! Judgmental assholes who'd make a big deal about whether they approved of somebody's tattoos or not aren't the kind of people whose approval is worth it.

Tattoos can be beautiful and enhance a person's attractive qualities like any other adornment.

Fandom tattoos, though? As in corporate logos and characters and video game stuff? Oh lord, no...
