Anyone know the best place to get a tattoo that won't get completely mutilated as I get older?

I want to get a tattoo, but I'm very sensitive to the idea that wherever I get it the tattoo might get all distorted and weird as I age. SO, I'm basically trying to figure out the part of my body that will probably change the least (for example, I haven't had any kids yet but I'm planning on it, so I figure no stomach/chest area tattoos).

Anyone who's had some tattoos for good while care to weigh in, or just have any general info?

Well, I've heard one good place is one the ankle-- not only does it really not become loose/ wrinkly, it's easy to hide if you don't wanna show it.

I have had a tattoo on my ankle for 14 years now. Most people don't know I have a tattoo. It's normally covered up by my work pants. The only time people really see it is if I wear shorts/skirts and that depends on the shoes I'm wearing as well. Other then needing a color touch up it still looks the same. It also seems - to me - that ones placed on the shoulder blade area don't distort as much. YMMV though.

I would suggest waiting two years before getting any tattoo. If you still want it after two years, you should get it. If you want something custom made first check the tattoo artist's portfolios in their office. Don't be afraid to shop around. When you find someone whose style you like, then ask the artist to draw your tattoo for you. Usually costs $20 for them to do so. If you do not like something about the drawings they provide tell them and get it changed. Also you can ask for different colors and shading. Make sure you find an artist that you like and a tattoo that you're okay with having for the rest of your life.

I am in the middle of getting a much larger tattoo on my upper back, and went through five tattoo artists before I found someone who drew what I asked for. Be respectful of the artist, but be firm with what you want. This is your skin, and it will be a part of you forever.

Thirding the ankle. I've had mine for about a decade. It's easy to hide, it's easy to show off, and hasn't distorted at all despite some serious weight and muscle-mass fluctuations during the time I've had it.

Another place to consider would be on your chest between your breasts. I know a couple of people who have tattoos there that look great after many years, and at least one of them got hers before she had kids.
