I think you've answered your own question, within your own secret anon. The "Mean Girls" picture you've chosen says it all. This is * exactly* what fandom is, practically all the time. Faceless mean girls, lurking all over teh interwebz. Instead of skulking the halls of a high school.

Basic bitches are everywhere, even in fandom. Maybe even especially in fandom. Just don't let them get to you, anon, if you do they win. Just imagine them getting run over by a bus or something like Regina George, it will make you feel better. :3

Some people are just deeply insecure, OP, whether they realize it or not. Heck, especially when they don't realize it. They compensate for it by lashing out when they think they will face little or no repercussions for their words and actions, and convince themselves that "it's just for fun" or "geez, it's just the internet, they should grow a thicker skin, like me".

I hope this doesn't sound mean, but when someone known for being "bitchy" steals your stories, you should call them out publicly, not privately, because in private they can be prepared and spin the story in their favor to the masses. Do it in a public venue and in a way that you can present all your evidence (screencap the heck out of everything they did!) and so that they cannot erase it.

I hope that this never happens again, though. Stealing sucks. :(

This. I've found some of the meanest people out there feel outcast/victimized in other parts of their lives (whether currently, or in the past).

When they have the opportunity (popularity, success, p-o-w-e-r) instead of being rational, happy humans, they turn around and use the bad behavior they experienced on others. Of course that's not always the case, but sometimes it happens.

The fact that this person felt that they needed to steal your story in the first place is very telling. Why would they feel so insecure about their own writing/ideas in a ~friendly, amateur, let's have fun and write fanfic!~ situation?

OP... Either join the fight (publicly call 'em out, etc) or walk the fuck away. Then again, your creative stuff belongs to you, and shit like this in a "real world" setting can be really dangerous (plagiarism).

But also consider: Keep in mind that an idea vs. straight up stealing word-for-word is kind of tenuous (ex: pixar/dreamworks both make movies on the same subject/basic plot, but are completely different and both are successful in their own way) . The way this other person acted is totally out of line, especially for a ____friend___... but basic story concepts get thrown about and used and reused all the time.

I think I want to hear more about the story-stealing.

I think it's human nature to be honest and I don't think it'll ever go away. Some people will grow out of it and some will be stuck as Mean Girls forever.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-26 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Well OP you're talking about someone who stole your story, so they were probably pretty uncool to begin with. Maybe not the best sample to base a group-wide judgment on.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-26 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
unrelated but when i saw the movie mean girls, i was so disappointed when it got all moral-y towards the end. i thought it was so fun until that point. i'm not a mean person or anything, so i feel really guilty feeling that way, but...well, deep down, i just know that if i had been in that situation i would have come out on top and loved every minute of it.

..and yeah, not the point of the movie, i know.

Why is it they felt the need to point out fangirls as bitches and miss know it all's. The fanboys are just as bad and yet no one ever mentions them. Apparently the annoying stuck up fans can only be female.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
True 100%, but maybe OP's fandom is predominantly female, to the point that they haven't personally come across male fans (it happens).

(Anonymous) 2012-06-26 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a people thing, not just fandom and girls. There are scads and scads of folk out there who can only feel good about themselves if they think they're standing higher than somebody else. If they can't find somebody else 'lower down' they'll try to push somebody else lower down. I've found it best to recognize what's going on and try to never stoop to it myself.

I think you are hanging out with a lot of very young fans if this is your impression.

regina george

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I hear you, anon. We had a newcomer to our fandom group and while her opinions and comments on the actual fandom are fine, she does seem inclined to be a negative nelly when other people post suggestions for the group. (Like, someone posts an idea for a challenge/contest etc, and because she personally isn't interested she has to make that apparent to everyone else involved and say why it's a terrible idea.)

I don't know how to address this as I'm kind of new to the group myself, and I don't want to make it seem like it's an issue of "You're new here, so shut up". I wouldn't want to take this kind of negativity from the oldest oldbie, either.

It's also frustrating because she has gone out of her way to say how much she hates drama and people who cause it, but a lot of her comments seem like she's trying to start something. WHY???

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Contact the mods, if there are mods. This is the kind of user that has to be stopped from the beginning, before she has done any true damage, either through reprimands or through banning. If you (as a group, but also the moderators) let her have her way, she'll poison your community. Give her enough time, and soon she'll start "corrupting" other users, and then you'll have dissent, flame wars, and so much drama. I've seen it happen many times before, exactly like that. You're still on time to nip this problem in the bud.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, there aren't really mods- so to speak. Just people who seem to get the ball rolling on activities more than others? This is all on FB, so the best we have is the community admin, but they aren't really the sort to tell someone off because they're saying negative things. Also, this person has gone on record as saying something to the effect of "whatever people think about me isn't going to change how I act", and although I don't think she was referring to this sort of behavior, I'm pretty sure she would take any comment from someone like me and chuck it out the window. I think she's found a kindred spirit, but it's someone that's on the fringes of the group and I think they are content to sit there and fume.

Yeah, I don't want this to blow up and I guess someone is going to have to say something. I wish I was better at doing that. ~_~;;; I'll probably just address it the next time it happens with a "Hey, it's fine that you don't like such-and-such and don't want to participate, but just announcing it to the whole group while criticizing and not offering helpful feedback might discourage other people from joining in."

Yeah. Steeling myself for the backlash. >.>

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, but thank you for your comment. It has reinforced my resolve to do something about it.

mean girls are mean, in fandom and elsewhere. it's not unique to fandom

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe if you didn't use misogynist slurs and project such a hateful attitude toward women you'd have less toxic interactions with people in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-27 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew somebody was going to get to this eventually. =/

Some people just fail at life. Some people just want to watch the world burn. Some people just gotta find something better to do with their lives. Some people are just so stupid that they can't find anything better to do with their lives.
