Have you watched subtitled editions or dubbed editions? As one of my friends in my language program put it, he found himself without a sincerity filter when it comes to Japanese. But that same over the top, sincere language comes across as terribly fake and clunky in English. I've always found the writing to be really good, but I went and rewatched Tonari no Totoro in English a while back and the dialogue had me cringing.

But if it's how the story plays out for you and not the dialogue, then, um, I guess I'm left with maybe you're expecting a more "western" type of plotting and Miyazaki definitely... does not follow those conventions.

Ayrt liked HMC and PM, so I don't think that's the problem. I personally can't stand Ponyo, but it's mostly because they try too hard to make Ponyo cute and lovable and hyperactive and genki that I just can't stand her.

I also didn't really like Ponyo. I feel like the reason is that it's much more of a kid's movie than other Miyazaki movies; the others are appropriate for children, but I still enjoy all of them and I'm an adult. But Ponyo doesn't have nearly the same depth of character or story that the others do, so it doesn't age as well.
