As someone who hates the sound of people chewing and such... why is this being pathologized? It's reasonable to be grossed out by people who can't eat without making a symphony of wet squishy food and smacked lips. This isn't something that is wrong with *us.*

Related: I once had a roommate who could be heard eating over the sound of music or a video on my laptop turned up all the way and through a closed door. What the.

Now that just sounds nasty.

I once had a roommate who couldn't shut her mouth while she was eating for anything. The sounds were nauseating! The sounds people make when they're chewing, I can deal with. Sounds of people being blatantly rude while eating, no.

Because misophonia is not just being annoyed by sound. When someone who has misophonia hears their trigger-which is not just chewing sounds, btw*

*List of known triggers:

Muffled sounds through walls/doors
Dripping noises
Clearing throat/Sniffling/heavy breathing
Pen clicking
Heavy foot-steps
Metal on metal
etcetc

they go from 1 to 10. Anger so strong that they want to resort to violence to stop the source of their trigger, or an intense need to run. Things as simple as popping gum or clicking of pens can drive them to tears.

I've suffered with it ever since I was about eight, which is normally when people with misophonia start to develop it. I've wanted to punch someone's teeth in for chewing gum around me more than once, or gone into shaking/sweating so bad I had to leave the room. This is...more than just annoyance over sounds.

THIS.

Something is a real problem when it interferes with your everyday life.

Practically everyone gets irritated by sounds they find annoying. For me, it's cutlery scraping together. For other people, it might be chewing.

Not everyone has things like misophonia or other phobias. Those are more extreme reactions than mild irritation.

I guess because it bothers some people more than average? I dunno, when I was a kid, my parents used to tell me I had to be autistic to be bothered by the sound of people chewing.

AW. Sorry about your parents. That sounds more like something said out of ignorance rather than malice, but still: ouch.

Because there is a difference between being annoyed by something, and having an involuntary reaction to sound that actively affects the way you live your life. If the sound of a person breathing incites so much rage in you that you are in danger of hitting that person, or if you cannot write a test in school unless you are in a room by yourself because you cannot concentrate on anything but the sounds other people are making, then it crosses over from just an annoyance to an active disorder.

Because I'm too lazy to find my earlier comment and edit it: for example, you can dislike/be afraid of spiders, but if you are avoiding doing things or unable to live your life fully because you are so terrified of encountering a spider, then you probably have a disorder that needs to be treated. Most people don't like spiders, but it doesn't cross the line unless it's affecting the way you live.
