That was my first guess too, but I always thought that was conservative propaganda / the haters hating.

Don't think so, Spongebob's asexual presently (on account of being, well, a sponge) but started out heterosexual (the crush on Sandy!)

But, there was also that oddly romantic episode where he and Patric raised an adopted baby... clam, was it? So, maybe he's biromantic or something.

The teacher on Hey Arnold was thought to be gay by the fanbase, and when they asked the creator, he confirmed it. It was only implied on the show itself, though.

I'm pretty sure there were a few other shows that did the same thing, but I don't know how many of them were outright confirmed.

Implied gay is simply getting crap past the radar, but what we need is for the radar to fully accept openly homosexual characters.
