I love both the movie and the book (I'd love the movie just for introducing me to the book), but the book is definitely the superior story, especially when it comes to Howl's character development and the crapload of awesome female characters. (Whoa, I just realized the movie turned every woman but Sophie into an antagonist...even her stepmom was a heel in the end for no reason.)

Re female characters: wow, really? Well that gives me a legitimate reason to dislike it, I guess. xD
I'm personally of the belief that the best way to do it is to watch the film first. Most everyone I know who watched the film then read the book enjoyed both, but almost everyone who did it the other way around hated the film.

It was pointed out to me below that Sophie's one remaining sister was still cool, but the movie still cut a lot of good women and gave the remaining ones some iffy roles (Madame Suliman as an antagonist, Sophie's stepmother sabotaging her, and the Witch being rendered powerless instead of the badass, if evil, woman she was in the books). But yeah, I definitely don't think I'd be such a fan if I got to the book first, I'd've been all "What happened to Michael? Where'd all this twee come from?!"

What they did with Michael and the Wicked Witch of the Waste (why was she even in the film, anyway?) are two of my biggest issues with it. :/
I probably should try watching it again, tbh, it's been a really long time.

Her stepmom wasn't that bad--she was flighty, but by the end of the movie you saw she legitimately loved Sophie. The beginning of the movie hints that bigger plot from the book about Lettie thinking her mother is trying to trap Sophie into working for nothing, but it's let go almost immediately. Lettie herself is clearly supposed to be sweet and kind. The Witch of the Waste is actually more sympathetic. Suliman got a gender switch.

I think the worst that can be said is that it just did away with the strong female characters in any big role, not that they any worse as characters.

Oh, right, I forgot about Lettie, she was okay in the movie, if more sidelined, but I stand by the stepmom being unnecessarily villainous, because she knowingly sabotaged her stepdaughter's and Howl's protection from Madame Suliman for some reason we were never even told. We could have at least gotten a line about her thinking Howl had cursed Sophie and she thought she was saving her or something.

Kinda on the fence about the Witch - I think she was more sympathetic in the book once we found out it was her fire demon at the helm, which could have happened to Howl, too, without interference, whereas the Witch's villainy in the movie was entirely willful.
