Take a moment, step back and think. Ask yourself: Will it really help matters to dogpile someone, to respond with name-calling and insults and rudeness when someone says something out of ignorance?

Yes, actually. At least it will let them know that what they're doing is not acceptable.

And if they have a shred of decency they'll ask themselves why people are getting angry at them and instead of reacting with rage and defensiveness and entitlement they'll apologize and maybe do some research.

Not acceptable in certain LJ/tumblr communities. If you dogpile some dude for using the word bitch in a comment on ffrants, for example, it won't stop him from using the word bitch on other forums and IRL.

You assume humans are fundamentally good and that we would consider the feelings of some random strangers on the Internet to be more important than our own feelings. If you are attacked, you attack back, it's basic instinct you can find in almost all living creatures. Not to mention, you know, cultural differences...
