That's what I hear a lot -- but I loved the movie and was so, so, so very meh about the book. I think I needed the unironic do-gooders to enjoy the plot, and the book is quite ironic. (Not that it's a bad thing, just not my thing.)

OP, when you watch Ghibli movies, you almost have to feel more than think. If you're looking for them to make sense logically, it ain't gonna happen. Emotionally is another story.

I'm not even that big a fan of the book - I think it's a little over-rated compared to Diana Wynne Jones's other work. It's not her worst book but it's definitely not one of her best. So really, it makes no sense for me to dislike the film as much as I do.

That's interesting to hear, actually ... I'd heard her other books were good but then I'd heard how wonderful HMC the book was. So her other stuff is maybe better? I might venture to check out some, then.

My personal favourites are the Chrestomanci series. I think her best book, if I had to pick one, is probably Fire and Hemlock (it's had by far the most critical attention, anyway). I'd also recommend the Dalemark Quartet if you like more serious fantasy.
