I don't think there's anything wrong with enjoying the love story in Twilight, since you realize it's something that would be unhealthy in reality. We all have guilty pleasures, don't fret.

Yep! I think it's OK to like just about anything as long as you recognize the parts where it's unhealthy/problematic.

Linking my favorite article about the subject, How to Be a Fan of Problematic Things.

Exactly.

It's amusing in a train-wreck sort of way. As long as you don't convince yourself that it's a so totally romantic~~ relationship, who cares.

Not sure if I'm getting your meaning right or not, but sometimes things can be enjoyable because they're "bad." Watching MST3K can cheer me up sometimes, and I really enjoy watching the reviewers on TGWTG riff on bad movies when I'm stressed out. It's fun.

If you mean that you enjoy them in a more played-straight, un-ironic way, I still think that's okay. Most people have guilty pleasures, and there are a lot of things I really enjoy that I don't think are perfect.

Anon, if it makes you feel better, I enjoyed the G.I. Joe movie. And I will probably love the second as well.

We all secretly love something we know is probably pretty bad objectively, and take warm-blanket-fresh-from-dryer comfort in them.

it's ok, op. twilight is full of elements that feed some of every fandom's favorite kinks. over-protectiveness? that imprinting shit? the creepy thing about not knowing if a dude wants to kill/eat you or fuck you? themes of a thousand fics, in a thousand fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
this is so true

It's perfectly okay to like bad things. I love terrible things. It's when you start to consider problematic things okay, that there needs to be an intervention.

If you haven't seen it, this is a useful essay. :)

(Also, I totally getcha. Guilty pleasures are guilty pleasures. *eyes huge stack of romance novels in the corner*)

I have a guilty pleasure for teen drama movies, so don't worry. I pop movies like Mean Girls, Bring It On, She Gets What She Wants and Twilight in all the time when I just want some background noise.
