Keep in mind that nifty is The Pit of gay fiction. It is easier to find well-written stories at http://www.gayauthors.org/index.html, though ymmv.

Gay fiction and art do exist, and they are flourishing. It may be that gays not caring about gay literature is the only view you have experienced so far, secret OP, but gays - and straights - do care about gay fiction.

Also, slash fiction is not the same thing as gay fiction. They have different target audiences and this may very well have skewed your views.

There's some good stuff at Nifty, but you have to wade through the sludge to get at it. I agree that the better stuff is generally published.

From what I remember, the Nifty Special Archives were decent reads.

By the way, this is a very well known example of a gay guy in fandom http://fanlore.org/wiki/Minotaur. They do exist.
