I also find it ridiculous to be annoyed at people using rape as a plot device for drama. Not liking something is fine, but you are crossing way into kinkshaming territory.

I don't think it's kinkshaming so much as wanting an author who is appropriating a minority's personal struggles to at least do a little research to portray a realistic experience instead of it just being a super awesome plot point. And it seems like OP has a good deal of frustration at "my culture does it this way so clearly it is the default" attitude that can be kind of prevalent. If you want to write homophobia there are plenty of viable fandoms for that, or AU's, to randomly write it into a material it isn't in is a little weird and off-putting for some of us.

Yeah, but where do you get to draw the line with that? Whose opinions are going to count? Who gets to police that sort of thing? And why does it have to portray a realistic experience especially when nothing else being portrayed is hyperrealistic?

The best way to deal with this is to simply avoid the writers who write things in a way you don't like, instead of trying to micromanage who can write what where and how. Fandom doesn't work that way -- it can't. And getting furious that it doesn't doesn't do any good except to make your fandom experience much worse that it would have been if you'd simply gone "yuck" and backarrowed.

I don't see anyone trying to ban this kind of writing. Just letting people know the inherent problems in what they are saying. I also just wanted to point out the difference in kinkshaming and pointing out problems in people's writing and characterizations considering a subject they don't seem familiar with when they are spreading a stereotype.

Nah, *kink* is different from tossing it in as a convenient plot device. If you're going to use rape for kink that's one thing. Tossing rape in casually because lol the story isnt going anywhere and it needs some drama to spice it up why not rape lol is another.

It's a narrative kink. Not a sexual one.

And while I'm behind you when you say that it's shitty writing when people half-ass their plots and just throw random stuff in without giving it the proper thoughtful treatment -- shitty writing isn't something that needs to be policed. And simply because it has rape or a clumsy attempt to explore homophobia in it doesn't mean that it should be drummed out of fandom. You vote with your backarrow button, same as you do with any fic that makes you groan.

But tossing around one-dimensional homophobia and rape because the plot's going nowhere/the characters need some angst out of the blue/etcetera is usually the most prominent aspect of lack of planning and bad writing. If it features in a fic, then it's usually bad!fic, because if you can't add anything but carboard cut-outs, then your writing probably sucks.

It's not saying that there should be some sort of police to chase these down, but it's becoming a tiresome stereotype and so people keep calling this lazy writing out on it. A good author can handle whatever topic they choose to tackle - hell, if I remember correctly, you wrote Tetris smut and you made it work - but bad authors seem to resort to these two cliches constantly. That doesn't mean the tropes should be kicked out of fandom, but the writers behind their misuse need some serious improvement.

Thing is, I got to be a good writer who can handle these things by once being a bad writer who couldn't. My old crap is not on the internet, it's on my computer, but I went through tons of poorly thought through tropes for drama before I got the writing maturity to get things right. Which is why I'm generous with bad writers. Practice helps. Writing through all the cheap and cheesy angst will pave the way for writing better angst later on. Not that all will, but you gotta start someplace.

Yeah, this. PWP non-con/dub-con/rape as a kinkmeme fill? Sure- my kink, not yours. Non-con/dub-con/rape as something that adds actual conflict and furthers the plot. Great, if the author is skilled enough to handle it well and sensitively. Non-con/dub-con/rape as a way to cause drama, spice things up (usually the hurt part of the hurt/comfort trope) or just because that's what bad people/villains do? Yeeeeeah... side-eyeing you hard and clicking the back button on my browser. In that last scenerio the rape is usually treated very casually and unrealistically.

I didn't get the impression that the OP was referring to it as a kink. Even if it were, criticism isn't the same as shaming, nor would I consider it somehow more negative than making light of people who find it legitimately uncomfortable.

For the sake of being devil's advocate, I also think you're being unfair to folk who are into modern rpf if "you're kink shaming!" only applies when you are comfortable.
