Not trying to be sarcastic or anything, but can you please give me some good examples? I always liked the idea of a darker, more realistic approach of fantasy, but the only book I've found and appreciated was the ASoIaF series, and I would love to read other ones.

Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher series. It's from the 90's and blows ASOIAF out of the water (not sure if they finished an English translation by now though, do you know Russian or Polish?).
