Yes, yes, they do. Or at least it seems that way when everybody and their dog comes out to defend yet another a fantasy full of [insert institutional prejudice] with "It's based on history! REALISM!" Even if the world has sorcery and dragons and talking trees and shit. I'm not asking for a conflict-free social utopia, but certain groups of real people not being treated like absolute shit on a bootheel sometimes seems to be more laughably implausible than rainbow unicorns for so many writers and it's dismaying.

And then it gets even worse then the kind of institutional prejudice being used in canon isn't even historically accurate and all the characters' have distinctively modern values like 90% of the time. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)God I hate that, "it has all these awful things and so it is OBVIOUSLY realistic," rhetoric. Such bullshit. Plus it has the gross implication that no matter what world you go to THESE PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS BE LOOKED DOWN UPON. ALWAYS. YOU CANNOT ESCAPE IT (because, you know, the author wants that shit in their book).
