I haven't been a part of this fandom in a long time (even though I do watch the show...usually much later than everyone else), but Gwen started boring me after the first or second season, and I very much think Arthur/Gwen was rushed and not at all well written but...there's no reason to fixate on something like this. It's just petty.
TL;DR: Ship what you want to ship, but even if you don't like other characters or pairings try to be civil about it. I have (in the past) seen people insult Gwen's looks and...grr.

It makes me forever sad that I got into fandom between S2 and S3 airing and I fell back out again not long after S3 started because of BS like what's mentioned in the secret.

D: I never saw much of this in fandom just because I wasn't terribly involved outside of reading fic. But I know its out there so I understand why you left. (There have to be better parts, right? But I know from experience they aren't always easy to find.)
What confuses me is that Merlin is such a cheesy, fun, guilty pleasure kind of show, and people take it SO seriously. I'm not saying that itself is doing it wrong, just that when it becomes this level of wacky fandom hate people probably should take a step back and reevaluate the words they just typed.

Anyways. There were good parts(and I imagine there still are)! I got into a shipping comm, camelot_love, and the people there were wonderful for months, until serious spoilers for S3 started coming out, the Arthur/Gwen/Lancelot wank broke out, and a huge mess came out about people who hated the men and were irrational Angel stans(to the point of dissing everyone else ever), and people who were actually Arthur/Merlin fans who were trolling the hell out of us, and on top of that, people who hated Lancelot to bashing and people who hated Arthur to bashing(all in an A/G comm...*shakes head*), and everything went to hell. People took sides, typically the Angel/Gwen side vs. the Bradley/Arthur/open to men side, and eventually the comm split in two. Combine all that drama with the advancing relationship between A/G leading to a metric ton of slashy wank...well, yeah. I got the hell out of dodge and I've never really looked back. I do still have some fantastic friends from those days, though. It was fun, like you said, and people didn't take it so seriously. I will NEVER understand why people get so crazily obsessed over things like this. Especially things as flaw-filled and fun as Merlin.
Aw, thanks! I get a ton of people saying that and it only reinforces my desire to keep it around as my default XD

My head almost hurts just from reading this. I just don't get why some people can't leave others alone to enjoy what they enjoy, and keep their hate to themselves. (Which, okay, a certain level of dislike is fine, but if you hate something so adamantly that you constantly get in arguments over it, there is something wrong.)
If you dislike a character or a pairing that's fine, most of us do! Why not just keep it to yourself, or if you do get into a discussion about it, stay respectful and friendly instead of causing silly wank? And why oh why do people have to hate other characters that aren't their character? Why would anyone hate all characters of a certain gender in a show? Is it just because they're men, or they really just don't like any of the male characters? Why would you ship two characters while hating one? I don't get any of this. I can't fathom that people got so up in arms over this that a community had to be separated. Gah.

Seriously, I still have trouble dealing with Merlin fans to this day(hell, a lot of my unfortunate experiences re: het and slash came from this fandom), especially hard-core Gwen fans and Arthur/Merlin shippers, 'cause my opinions and knee-jerk reactions are tainted by what went down. All because a handful of people couldn't get over themselves.
I honestly never understood why some people were so violently pro-women/anti-men. Like, you knew they were all for strong women/female characters and the males were a secondary focus to them, but when things really started getting nasty the claws came out. I always wondered if it was kinda like a response to the rampant misogyny, like them saying "HA! You hate our women? Well we hate your men! HOW DOES IT FEEL TO WATCH THEM BE BELITTLED!?"
Those Gwen/women-primary fans made a new comm and convinced a large portion to move, while the more pairing-oriented shippers stayed behind. I know my flist was torn over it. It was all so ridic and useless, looking back.
What really sucks is the number of Arthur/Gwen shippers who've jumped ship after the way Arthur treated her this past season. Which, I can understand, but the way they just up and left in a huff, attacking Arthur and anyone who tried to explain his actions with things like justifying abuse. I wasn't even in fandom and I got to see the fallout across LJ.
