(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)I think there's quite a bit of difference between "I chose to identify with this fictional character." and "Thanks for keeping the roads in good condition, so I can get back and forth to where I need to be. Thanks for taking care of crime in my area, so I don't have to feel like I'm in danger. Thanks for keeping shelves stocked so I can eat tonight."
I think there is a very disproportionate amount of attention given to the entertainment industry.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)This. It's ridiculous and I never want to contribute to it. Even if you find a character deeply moving and have a life-changing experience because of them, IMO you should be lining up to meet the writers and directors, not the actors.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 12:00 am (UTC)(link)No one said they couldn't. But, in general, actors get way too much credit. Queueing up to touch their hand or get their signature is a little silly.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 02:17 am (UTC)(link)I'm not sure if I'd want to inflate the directors' egos with that, but I can dig wanting to meet a writer for that reason, and I think that might explain why OP doesn't have as many issues with getting book autographs. *shrug*

Writers come to some conventions and stuff. They might not be AS high profile, but it's totally fun to meet a good writer live. I've also seen Neil Gaiman (though I didn't get to meet him, just hear him talk) and I went to a talk/signing for Tamora Pierce years ago (2003 maybe?) and both of those experiences were excellent.

I used to think this way, but then I realized how much I enjoy movies, and characters, and entertainment, and the escape those things allow me to have, and how much time I spend enjoying them. I'm not saying actors should be paid as much as doctors, but they do work hard and make sacrifices so that I can enjoy their shows or movies, and I can respect that and see nothing wrong with expressing it to them when I have the chance. It's not even so much that I think they're so much better than everyone else; I'm a thanker, I thank everyone because being appreciated is definitely a good feeling.
Emotional needs and physical needs are pretty equal for me, and entertainment is definitely a part of that. I'm a total escapist, though, and I realize that not everyone is.
