I think there is a very disproportionate amount of attention given to the entertainment industry.

This. It's ridiculous and I never want to contribute to it. Even if you find a character deeply moving and have a life-changing experience because of them, IMO you should be lining up to meet the writers and directors, not the actors.

Actors can give great performances just like all other artists can make great works of art. And the success of the character does rely a lot on the talent of the actor to convey whatever.

AYRT

No one said they couldn't. But, in general, actors get way too much credit. Queueing up to touch their hand or get their signature is a little silly.

Emotionally it's the one that people connect with most. And so it's the one that you'd get the biggest kick out of meeting.

That's fine, but I still think the attention they receive is weird and undeserved.

*shrug* As near as I can tell, people go nuts over celebrities because they like going nuts over celebrities - it gives them a thrill. And on the list of things that people do for kicks, there's a lot weirder.

Blah blah blah last word blah blah.

IMO you should be lining up to meet the writers and directors, not the actors.

I'm not sure if I'd want to inflate the directors' egos with that, but I can dig wanting to meet a writer for that reason, and I think that might explain why OP doesn't have as many issues with getting book autographs. *shrug*

While I like meeting people in front of the camera (meeting one of my favorite singers was an utterly amazing experience), writers are really really fun to see live. I got to see Paul Cornell, who (among other things) wrote some of my favorite episodes of Doctor Who (Human Nature/The Family of Blood and Father's Day). He seemed genuinely touched when I told him how much Human Nature resonated with me and that the two parter was my favorite.

Writers come to some conventions and stuff. They might not be AS high profile, but it's totally fun to meet a good writer live. I've also seen Neil Gaiman (though I didn't get to meet him, just hear him talk) and I went to a talk/signing for Tamora Pierce years ago (2003 maybe?) and both of those experiences were excellent.

Yeah, because writers like say, Joss Whedon, don't get as much ridiculous ego-inflating feedback as it is. Poor writers.

I can't stand Joss Whedon, but he's a rare exception.
