i don't hate him, but i can't like his character. i could in the first iron man, but i don't understand why he is *still* a total douche. he seemed to have worked through a lot of his issues...but no, apparently not. characters who don't grow annoy me.

It's basically a defense mechanism. If he's a douche, people can't get close, and therefore he can't get hurt.

As well, his douchery is kind of different to people he actually likes. Like, there is a great Tumblr article about why he is the way he is toward Banner, and it basically boils down to him trusting that Banner has Hulk under control so he'll push buttons to SHOW he does.

indeed, i think his way with bruce was actually decent of him. you can tell he has a high regard for him, and like you said, pushing his buttons is his way of showing that he trusts him.
i just don't understand why he would still be afraid of getting hurt. after everything he's been through, and after pepper, you would think he would feel better about showing vulnerability.

Well, if he graduated from MIT at 17, imagine all the crap he went through, being a little kid at college with a lot of just-barely-adults who were probably by turns fascinated, jealous, resentful and maybe even treated him like a little freaky kid. He had to grow a pretty thick skin, i'd say, because if Tony Stark, heir to billions, got snarly and nasty, it would be all over the news/papers/etc.

So being sarcastic and snotty was probably the better option.

Yeah, this.

He's sarcastic and flippant, but that's a defense mechanism, IMO. Plus, it's hard not to be impatient if your brain is running in different directions to other people and you're a risk-taker by nature. But being awesome at some things doesn't make you awesome at all things, like sensitivity.

If he was a sensitive, mellow billionaire genius, he'd be Bill Gates and not Tony Stark.

Well, if he somehow managed to go from the huge asshole he was before Afghanistan to a great guy with no issues in just a couple of years, I'd find that a little unrealistic -- bad habits are hard to break so I like to see him struggling to be a decent person.

I do hope he keeps on steadily improving in Iron Man 3 and Avengers 2 and whatever else he appears in, though. I hate it when character development backslides.

NA He's not really? Why do feel he's still a douche in the Avengers? He's still snarky and irreverant to authority, but he actually seemed to be the one most interested in doing things and working with the team right from the start?

But actual genuine question to people who feel he was an actual douche in TA? What actions made you feel that? *curious*

Yeah, this. Tony basically just covers everything he does in a veneer of glibness and douche, so that it's easy not to notice when he's being genuinely serious and charitable deep down (reaching out to "omg guys it's the hulk don't make the hulk angry lol!!!" Bruce, offering to take Coulson to see his cellist lady friend or whatever), or when his attention-whoring and self-aggrandizing are most conspicuously absent (throwing the missile through the portal and not taking the opportunity to go HEY CAP SEE THIS SELFLESS LIFE-RISKING SHIT I'M DOING BET YOU FEEL BAD NOW)
