THIS. I don't get how anyone can call him a bad person. Obnoxious and arrogant and not always in the right? Sure. But bad? Never.

I could definitely hate a character who acted like him, but who had started as a better person and started sliding into his present personality; but seeing as he started out as a massive tool and started improving himself and trying to become a good person and did a damn great job at not losing sight of that goal...I'm far more impressed than anything.

This was kind of the reason I didn't like Iron Man 2 all that much -- the character arc wasn't really something I was all that jazzed to see in a movie about a guy trying to redeem himself. I mean, yeah, he was having a meltdown at the time so it's not like it was actually OOC or anything, but as a story it was unsatisfying because I wanted to see him keep clawing his way up the redemption ladder, not "whoops, sudden detour into hitting rock bottom!" because, y'know, he started at rock bottom (and a movie is just very different from the comics, which is a long, episodic, never-finished series in which characters never age and status quo is god) and why dump him back there again so soon? It didn't actually damage the character at all, but it felt like a bit of a waste.

Yeah, it was a little bleh as far as storylines go, but really, if you think about addicts and people who have as many issues as he does - it makes sense. He *would* have his moments/days/weeks of back sliding and losing his grip. But even in the midst of all that, he wanted to be the better person and not put his *dying* onto anyone. Which - dear gods, but he was trying.

To be honest, i always found people like House and Tony Stark and whatnot kinda fun. I *like* people who speak their minds when it really counts - i like smart people who can explain stuff, even if they get a little condescending.

I love characters like them too, but only if they're just jerks and not abusive. In later seasons of House I couldn't even watch because of how he was putting the other characters through the wringer just to feel better himself.

Tony, though... He *tries* just so hard to be better for the people around him. Only he's been on his own so long that he never thinks to ask for help when the people who love him would still listen. He honestly thinks he's helping by not putting his own issues on Pepper and Rhodey in IM2

The biggest thing for me, though? He honestly seems happy to see his youngest fans. Maybe not the adults, but the kids? Who just need someone to believe in? Being able to connect with children just melts me.

I didn't watch house to the end but yeah, they seemed to kind of go overboard in the end, there. Tony never really seems to make other people feel bad just for the sake of making them feel bad, which shoots him right up to the top of that kind of crowd.

I do love it when someone can be nice to a kid without treating them like an idiot or a pet. That's always neat. :)
