I now need to see this movie...Brother Bear I mean. I've only watched the Nostalgia Critic's review of it (which is hilarious).

IMO it's a very good movie, regardless of connections to Brave (the main character is selfish and someone turns into a bear?) I think it's usually pretty overlooked since it came out in 2004 and the 2000s weren't the best time for Disney Animation but it's probably in my top 10.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Um... I don't really understand why. Can anyone enlighten me...?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
the bears... ?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone turns into a bear; the protagonists have family issues that lead to disaster at the hands of the protagonists; the protagonists are free spirits who don't follow the rules; the protagonists are mad at their fates; the protagonists learn that they're the selfish ones and that they have to change, not everyone else.

Except that the message in Brave was that you can take responsibility for your actions without being a completely different person. Merida didn't change much outside finally realizing a few things about her mother.

Meanwhile, protag in Brother Bear became a completely different person.

The only thing they have in common is some bear transformation. And imo, Brave handled it way, way better.

So...I feel bad for you, OP, that you can't enjoy an awesome movie.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
And I think Brother Bear was a much stronger more enjoyable film than Brave. We're allowed to have different thoughts and opinions, aren't we?

So... I feel bad for you that you can't enjoy an awesome movie.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I did enjoy Brother Bear, yo. I was commenting on OP not enjoying Brave because they kept comparing it to Brother Bear--significant difference.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
That's the same conclusion I came to! Brave is better! Plus, the transformed character gets to change back, unlike in Brother Bear. Of course, there's also the fact that Brave shows a much darker consequence of staying a bear, whereas Brother Bear ended it light and fluffy.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to say this needs a spoiler tag, though I agree a hundred percent, OP. It's not like someone turning into a bear and learning that YOU are the one who needs to change is a common theme.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would you compare them? Not seen Brave yet, but isn't it about a princess, oh no wait (SPOILER!!!!) you're talking about her mum? (SPOLIER!!!) Yeah that was spoilt for me here, but I'd rather not know any more please thanks.

Brother Bear's an OK film, but no way near Disney's best.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see the comparison, but I think it's kind of weird that Brave was the film it ruined for you when it's about ten times better than Brother Bear.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Not op. I could see the resemblance too but I still enjoyed 'brave', though I thought 'brother bear' was a much more solid film than yet another free spirited princess movie done by disney.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
fbrtbrkbb anyone could see the resemblance??? "ooh bears and let's learn to understand each other" neither is terribly original, not to say they are bad films though.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
How is BB more solid? Man kills bear, his brother turns him into a bear, then...sort of flounders and he chooses to be a bear at the end.

I enjoyed both films, but I halfway agree with you- during my first viewing of Brave the way the scene after the transformation was handled rang too clearly of Brother Bear. It was almost exact in its slapstick, down to the line "I don't speak Bear." Bizarrely distracting, but once I saw Brave again I was able to put it out of mind and enjoy the movie quite a bit more!

I knew somebody was going to make this comparison. The weird thing is, though, this is the first time I've seen someone make it.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. I keep hearing this, and...just no. Brave is a movie about a mother/daughter, and learning that you can come into your own fate, your own way. Brother Bear is about a man learning to stop being a prejudice dick, with an annoying little bear following him around (I HATE that character, ugh)

The only thing they have in common is someone turning into a bear. And Brave is a lot better than BB. (TBH, I think BB2 is better than BB1)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
yeah this.

[personal profile] kittybeard 2012-07-01 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yep they both sure do feature turning into bears.

...And that's bout it.

ANYWAY Both movies are pretty neat imo.

Haven't seen Brave yet, but my two cents is it'll have to try pretty damn hard to beat Brother Bear's soundtrack at least - Phil Collins, Tina Turner, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and The Bulgarian Women's Choir for the win ♥

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
I KNOW, RIGHT! I did get into it, but I just couldn't stop thinking about that.
