Um... I don't really understand why. Can anyone enlighten me...?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
the bears... ?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone turns into a bear; the protagonists have family issues that lead to disaster at the hands of the protagonists; the protagonists are free spirits who don't follow the rules; the protagonists are mad at their fates; the protagonists learn that they're the selfish ones and that they have to change, not everyone else.

Except that the message in Brave was that you can take responsibility for your actions without being a completely different person. Merida didn't change much outside finally realizing a few things about her mother.

Meanwhile, protag in Brother Bear became a completely different person.

No one is saying that they're exact, just very similar.

And in Brave, it seemed more like whine until you get your way. Yeah, Merida is a free spirit and blah blah blah but she still has a duty as a princess. Even with her mother letting her out of the arraigned marriage, I think she's going to be a horrible queen if she doesn't straighten up and fly right.

Also brother bear has that whole 'humans are evil' and 'animals are the kind and civilised ones' thing.

Really? Because the older brother in the movie was wise, the old spiritual woman was good...the only two people that seemed at fault was the protagonist, and the protagonist's other brother, who thought the bear had killed his family.

Her mother didn't let her out of the arraigned marriage. Merida will have to marry one of them, one day, all her mother did was allow her to choose which one she falls in love with. Hopefully she will.

*arranged

Arraign means to bring someone before a court on criminal charges or to find fault with someone. Come on, anon, they sound way different.

Only at the 'g' part. But thanks for the vocabulary lesson.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
just because something is your duty doesn't mean you can't ever have a valid point against it.

and by the end of the movie she DID straighten up wtf. She and her mother came to a compromise; she'll perform her duty when she's ready for it, and she managed to convince the other clans to wait because she HAD learned stuff from her mother.

I tend to think that by the end of the film, she has learned a lot about how she needs to act, and she is more mature. In other words, she's on the right track.
