Yes. It's something noticeable this year. I thought there was at least a connection to Artemis and/or women being cowardly in battle...let me look.

I think the closet thing I've read that diverts from that is Redwall - sure they're animals, and it's only one Warriormaid, but she gets to wield the sword of legend!

...ignore the icon irony.

My favorite book series has a woman who is a beast with a bow and also several woman who use that world's approximation of magic to fight. But it also has a whole culture of women who fight in single combat with spears and knives, as well as (later in the series) a guard unit of women with swords. I love the diversity tbh.

Redwall is ♥! I remember the mousemaid who fought with a rope flail. I thought that was pretty cool.

What is this book series? Please, share with the class. I need stuff to read.

It's the Redwall series, and this book specifically is Mariel of Redwall.

I never read that as a child, but I meant the one Diet Poison is talking about, with badass women. Wasn't Redwall about mice or something?

It's The Wheel of Time, most of which was written by the late Robert Jordan, and which is being finished by Brandon Sanderson. All of the books except one are out now, and that one will probably come out next year we think maybe.

It's long, and really fantastic. The worldbuilding is incredible, the characters are enjoyable - both male and female characters are fantastic - and the plot is good. The variety of peoples and cultures is intriguing. It's also very PG13 - there is some gore, but not a whole lot; there are scenes where sex obviously is a thing but never described in detail; there isn't a lot of violence and pointless killing. Instead the story is driven by the adventures of the various characters - and there are a lot of characters with interesting pasts, goals, and viewpoints.

I haven't picked up the books in a while, but I may do a second re-read before the final book comes out. I'm obviously biased, I just have a general love of the series, and I'm sure it has its flaws, but overall I think it's great and an enjoyable read. (Obviously it doesn't have a lot of flaws in common with ASOIAF, which is what I'm kind of thinking about since it's been huge in fandom lately. It's like medieval romance without all the creepiness, objectifying of women, rape, and unnecessary killing. And better written. And I just generally like it better.)

What about the one mouse girl who had that knotted rope flail?

Mariel!

...and I'm forgetting the Badger Ladies and The Long Patrol

You can't forget Cregga Rose Eyes! She will fuck your shit UP. With her bare hands.

Also, most of the female villains I remember didn't use bows. Tsarmina used her brute strength, I think, that albino ferret used a sabre, the Marlfoxes all had axes...

Oh! And there was that berserker black squirrel in Luke's story.

How did I forget the Marlfoxes and Kurda, those were my favorite female villains...

Apollo is also an archer, though, and no one would call him cowardly. Although, I suppose that might be the reason, it's a double-standard. :(

There's actually a historical trend, at least in certain parts of the world. In sub-Saharan Africa, women who were professional warriors (as opposed to just defending their territory) were almost always archers.

Actually...

It might have something to do with archery being one of the few athletic and weapon-based activities girls and women were allowed/encouraged to practice through history. In plenty of different cultures, not just western European.
