I went off in a rage at someone who posted this bullshit "Korra taught me that you're only perfect if you can bend, that no matter what you can't save the people you love, that it's okay to be a misogynistic asshole who cheats on girls, and that nice guys never get the girl" post. Because clearly they didn't see the symbolism and undercurrents of the plot and character interactions. Four hours later I realized that not everyone is an academic who critically analyzes TV shows aimed at young teens and relates it to history and political strife.

(still didn't apologize for it, because it pisses me off that fandom is trying to make Bolin a Nice Guy, rather than accepting that he's like... a regular nice guy. Not an asshole misogynist Nice Guy)

I for one can't stand Bolin.

I'm no Bolin fan myself, but it's the way everyone seems to turn into these misogynists about Korra and his relationship that makes me scream in rage. "He was so nice to her, why didn't she pick him!?!?" Uh, maybe because she has her own feelings and they talked about it like mature people, unlike you guys?

It was so mature how she kissed his brother in front of him.

I can't really explain it. It's like... fandom is the Nice Guy in place of Bolin? Their general reaction tends to be "HE WAS SO NICE TO KORRA! LOOK AT ALL THESE THINGS HE DID FOR HER! SHE SHOULD HAVE PICKED HIM!!" Um, no, she has her own feelings, and they discussed it like mature people (unlike fandom), and they remained friends because they like each other but Korra is interested in someone else. And Bolin is fine with that.

Yeah, I didn't even try to defend Mako, other than "He's not a one-dimensional character, because he does realize that he fucked up, but it's inexcusable that he's kind of a dick."

Examining and thinking about the shit you read/watch is important. It being aimed at young teens isn't an excuse.

If it's not even interesting enough to cause you to think about it for a little bit, why are you watching it?

That said that post is incredibly dumb, but there were problems with the Korra ending, even just from a writing perspective.

Well, actually there's plenty to suggest that the tension between benders and non-benders is well-justified and that benders can abuse their powers, but still have it be perceived as a tragedy when they lose them. But since you don't know how to analyze this genre, I understand why you missed it.
