Oh hey, are you me?

I went off in a rage at someone who posted this bullshit "Korra taught me that you're only perfect if you can bend, that no matter what you can't save the people you love, that it's okay to be a misogynistic asshole who cheats on girls, and that nice guys never get the girl" post. Because clearly they didn't see the symbolism and undercurrents of the plot and character interactions. Four hours later I realized that not everyone is an academic who critically analyzes TV shows aimed at young teens and relates it to history and political strife.

(still didn't apologize for it, because it pisses me off that fandom is trying to make Bolin a Nice Guy, rather than accepting that he's like... a regular nice guy. Not an asshole misogynist Nice Guy)

Mako's the douche, fandom. Get your head out of your ass. (And no, I'm not trying to downplay the symbolism and all that, but...let's face it, Mako really IS a douche.

Examining and thinking about the shit you read/watch is important. It being aimed at young teens isn't an excuse.

If it's not even interesting enough to cause you to think about it for a little bit, why are you watching it?

That said that post is incredibly dumb, but there were problems with the Korra ending, even just from a writing perspective.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
sorry but that finale wasn't that great.
And yeah, it is a legitamite cancern that shes just handed back all her bending. Fans have a right to criticize that.

I'd say you're acting exactly your age, which is young and impulsive. Your attacking people younger and more immature than yourself in fandom is a projection of your own insecurity about your young age.

Hey...you like what you like. Some people enjoy both newer and older stuff, and some only enjoy newer or older stuff. Both are okay!

I think it's totally normal to be annoyed by people who insult others in fandom because someone doesn't share their preferences. That said, then you went and wrote 'I roll my eyes at people who like the Star Trek reboot the best'. See what I'm saying? Lmao. Rolling your eyes is fine, but if you treat them any differently or harbor hate towards them...I'd say you're kind of missing the point.

(And for the record, I thought the Reboot was actually really fun and shiny and overall nicely done. Things have changed a lot since TOS and they wanted to pull in new fans as well as old ones, so I can understand why the movie was as it is, even if there are bits I don't like too.)

As for writing awful fanfiction...you have to start somewhere, right? *shrugs*

Also this secret = me in anime fandom circa 2002 but now I'm actually old in fandom terms, oops

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You're seventeen and acting like you're twelve. You know when you were a stereotypical 13-year-old fanboy/fangirl? [i]FOUR YEARS AGO.[/b] At least those stereotypical fangirls probably legitimately enjoy what they watch.

PS: My dad's sixty-two, and he really loves sci-fi. Anything even remotely sci-fi. Movies, TV shows, video games, doesn't matter. He even watches some anime, as long as it's appropriately sci-fi. He loves new stuff just as much as the stuff he grew up with.

Preferring old stuff is fine, everyone has their preferences, but it doesn't make you mature. It just means you like old stuff.

You are too young to be old. You are a teenager and teenagers have no business telling others "get off my lawn". If watching the reboot gets them into Trek, who the hell cares if they think TOS is cheese? We want them to witness the wonders of Star Trek and love it as much as we do. We don't need someone like you who sees as their business to run off the new folks. Who the hell cares that they don't like TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, or ENT? Leave them to what they like and watch what you like.

You gotta love the "I was doing this before you were even born!" arguments, like that makes you a better fan. With new fans brings new life to the fandom and new perspectives. Just because someone is young doesn't mean they can't contribute something worthwhile. Yeah, maybe they have some growing to do- like you did- but, I just remember that I was writing terrible self-insert fic and messing up too when I was their age when I start feeling a little get-off-my-lawn-ish

And then, you've got remember that some people are dicks as kids that just grow into bigger dicks as they age.

Also, I find that people who are into different things from their peers and stand apart from the crowd (whether the isolation or "apartness" is peer or self enforced) have a bit a bit of a superiority complex about their uniqueness- possibly as a defense for feeling left out. I'm not saying that this is a truth; it's just something to consider.

This secret just sounds EXACTLY like me from age 15 to age 22-ish. I feel you, OP. You've still got some growing up to do too, but, for some people, the only thing they have in common with people their age is the year they were born.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, bb. When I was 17 I was listening to nothing but classical music and opera instead of whatever was popular fifteen years ago, only I wasn't childish and arrogant enough to think my taste made me more mature or more interesting than or superior to other people my age. I wasn't up my own ass about it. I wasn't going around rolling my eyes at other people for liking what they liked.

You sound like an irritating shit. I hope you don't actually expect to get brownie points from older fans for that attitude of yours.

Seriously, though, this mindset drives me crazy. You're not super special for being young and liking "older" things. You are in fact no better than those "stereotypical fanboys/fangirls" because you're basically judging them because of their age when your attitude is not any better than theirs.

I feel ya, OP. Sort of, at least. Only in my case the fandom is Doctor Who, and my clear preference for Classic Who (NuWho isn't a reboot, but still). I'm also very into older movies and music, although this is more of a coincidence than anything else, and I'm not opposed to new stuff just because it's new. There's great stuff and bad stuff in every decade.

TBH, this genuinely crotchety old geezer doesn't mind the kids in fandom at all. I'll side-eye the hell out of you if you suggest there's some age that is too old for fandom, but fresh blood brings fresh ideas, talent and enthusiasm. Nothing wrong with that.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Good, we need more young people with good taste. It sounds like you have been developing yours.

I am totally the same way, though definitely not just in respect to fandom. I legit have a mental block about fangirling any actors/stars younger than myself, and seeing all these 14-year-olds on Tumblr is freaking me out. It's totally unfair, but there you are. >____>

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I used to be like this when I was a teenager, but then I grew up and got over it. Because it was really fucking immature behavior.

Tone of this comment: less condescending, more friendly

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
That's not old geezer behavior, it's typical self-important teen behavior. Sorry, I now that's not as cool and doesn't make you seem as superior inside.

But don't worry, it'll pass. I was like this not so long ago, I won't lie, but you can overcome it too:)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You actually seem very immature. As for Star Trek, as another relatively young fan(23) I can't stand the reboot because it's essentially new characters pretending to be the characters I know and love. I much prefer TOS but I can recognise that if I hadn't been a fan of it long before watching the movie and been introduced to it through the movie things might have been very different.

And I'm going to laugh forever if you're one of those 'elitists' who watched the reboot before TOS and now think that you are special for preferring the latter because I've seen some of those.
