For female characters who use swords, Erza from Fairy Tail and Shura from Blue Exorcist come to mind, if you like shonen anime.

I've never really read/watched anime. I don't even know what shonen anime is.

Shonen is the Japanese word for boy, and just designates that the target demographic is boys. If you've never watched anime before, I wouldn't recommend Fairy Tail, as it is over one hundred episodes of anime and thirty books of manga right now and still ongoing (I'm only on episode seventy-something at the moment D:). Blue Exorcist is only twenty-five episodes though, and all of it is on Hulu, so you might want to try it!

Well, I wouldn't say they're heroines, exactly, but Black Lagoon has lots of women that kick ass and take names. And have no problems killing you; not in terms of skills and certainly not morally.

Revy, the main female protagonist uses guns, as do most other characters, but later on you get a fine lady with an penchant for sharp knives and a goth who knows how to wield her chainsaw.

I'd recommend the manga over the anime, though, if you're interested.

Shonen means actiony anime aimed at young men aged 14-20. As an almost-30 female, it is my preferred anime genre because while the pkots are usually light, the adventure is solid.

Claymore is about female warriors using giant swords; Tokyo Majin has a lancer; High School of the Dead has girls using spears, swords, and rifles. Gunslinger Girl has preteens with assault weapons. Anime is a VERY rich avenue for women in combat, non-arching, if you just look.

Back in the 80s, Jessica Amanda Salmonson wrote a trilogy--Tomoe Gozen, The Golden Naginata, and Thousand Shrine Warrior. It's based loosely on the character of a woman warrior from The Tale of the Heike--a captain in the service of Minamoto no Yoshinaka, and a badass with both a bow and a sword.
