I would love to see a heroine who fights with swords/knives/close combat weapons!

Go watch Avengers. Seriously. Natasha does all of the above.

Kill Bill?

It's been on my to-watch list for ages, and I think I'd really enjoy it, but I have problems sometimes watching really violent/gory movies, and I've heard that it's pretty bad sometimes. :/

For female characters who use swords, Erza from Fairy Tail and Shura from Blue Exorcist come to mind, if you like shonen anime.

I've never really read/watched anime. I don't even know what shonen anime is.

Back in the 80s, Jessica Amanda Salmonson wrote a trilogy--Tomoe Gozen, The Golden Naginata, and Thousand Shrine Warrior. It's based loosely on the character of a woman warrior from The Tale of the Heike--a captain in the service of Minamoto no Yoshinaka, and a badass with both a bow and a sword.

Have you read ASOIAF/watched GoT? That's got Arya and Brienne fighting with swords.
majorshipper: (Default)

[personal profile] majorshipper 2012-06-30 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, ASOIAF is on my to-read list(though I keep putting it off because I hate starting unfinished things), and I really want to watch GOT, but I have to wait for a strategic time to arise (I live with my parents, and my computer is in the main living room area) XD

Let me include Buffy. Firefly/Serenity's River Tam. Wuxia movies like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "House of Flying Daggers". Geez, I think every comic book superheroine who's ever gotten her own TV show or movie; Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Catwoman, Elektra, Witchblade...

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Eowyn? From The Lord of the Rings (The Two Towers and The Return of the King). She's a secondary character, but daaaaamn, she can fight with a sword.
Brienne of Tarth, in Games of Thrones is also a sword user.

The "Nikita" TV show pretty much has women using all kinds of combat weapons you can think of.

In cartoons/animes: Chloe, in Noir (an all-women series!), Lan Fan (FullMetal Alchemist). I know there's others, but I can only come up with these right now!

I'm pretty sure Ella in the book Shade's Children used a sword? (In any case, she cuts a tracker out of her arm with a razor blade which is memorable enough that I can still tell you about it after reading the book over ten years ago.)

Kahlan in Legend of the Seeker fights with two knives or daggers - I'm not sure what they're called.
majorshipper: (Default)

[personal profile] majorshipper 2012-06-30 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they're daggers? Immature swords? LOL But yeah, I love LOTS. I wish there were more shows like it.

Alanna the Lioness and Keladry of Mindelan!!! Of Tamora Pierce's big series, only one of the heroines uses bow and arrow, Daine.

Alanna's weapon of choice is sword, and Keladry goes for pole arms or lance. And a lot of time goes into describing how Keladry got the arm muscles to pull off pole arms.

Kahlan in Legend of the Seeker! (Cara, a character in second season, uses an agiel which is basically a stick that makes you feel crazy pain). But Kahlan not only has magic powers but also fights with daggers. She's not quite the main character (that would be Richard) but Kahlan's so badass that it makes up for it. I actually really like the balance of power between men and women on the show!

EDIT: I see someone else already recommended it and that you've seen it, so yay!

Book series, not a movie, but Ilona Andrews's Kate Daniels book have the heroine preferring her sword. Never leaves home without it.

Mulan was a badass with a sword, or any other weapon she got her hands on.

If you like fantasy novels, I'd recommend 'Warrior' and 'Witch' by Marie Brennan; Mirage (one of the two main heroines) uses a sword and also fights hand to hand. She's a badass mercenary, too.

Really? NOBODY has mentioned Elizabeth Swann from the second-biggest trilogy of the last decade?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
I guess they assume that I've seen it? Which I have, and I love the entire series. She was flawless imho in At Worlds End.
