The only story I saw actually address this with a female character was Berserk. Poor Casca got her period right when she was facing a foe and had to run and get to a safe place where she could "take care" of the issue. Of course Guts would find her there and cause an awkward moment when he thinks she's injured.

Huh. If I was already facing the foe, I'd probably just go 'sod this, one thing at a time' and finish the fight first. I mean, sure, it's not pleasant, but it's not going to kill you or anything.

No, actually she did face him and fight him, but the cramps were hindering her movement and she almost lost her life a couple of times and had to get away before her distraction and pain gave the other guy the edge to kill her. It was done quite realistically as far as I remember.

As I recall, she'd killed several people that day first. And she did kill that guy later, while poisoned no less.

Am I the only one who doesn't get sudden!period? I don't have a predictable period exactly but I do start feeling something one to two days before I actually start my flow. I normally wear a liner just in case. I can't imagine suddenly getting a period with no warning.

She was aware, but it was the middle of a war. She wasn't going to say "hey guys, my monthlies might act up tonight".

Her body count was still pretty good that day, considering she also had a high fever (ended up passing out at one point). Nothing next to Gats, but he'd consider it an off day if a swing of his took out less then 2 mooks at a time so he's kinda hard to compare to.

I was just confused by the "take care" of the issue if she was aware couldn't she have per-emptively worn a maxi pad?

Aside from the fact that I don't think those were available in dark age midland, that wasn't the problem.

The problem was she had debilitating cramps while trying to dodge sharp metal death and swing a sword around, all while having a high fever. Intense physical exertion was likely making everything much, much worse.

She was also second in command of a mercenary group, so her not showing up to the fight was unthinkable, as was keeping everybody else from showing up.

Countess was off though, in that it didn't just "happen." She was clearly aware when the day started (we see her clutching her stomach in pain and going "damn, why today of all days?) but again, she couldn't say "Sorry guys, can't ride with you today" if she ever wanted to keep anybody's respect in the group.

I agree she couldn't just take a day off! I was just confused by the phrasing and imagined her stopping in the middle of a battlefield to apply a maxi pad or something. Thanks for explaining!

Tamora Pierce stories tend to deal with it in passing. When Alanna was disguised as a boy to learn to be a knight, her first period was a fairly big deal and led to her telling one of the main characters her secret. Keladry had a slightly easier time, since she wasn't in disguise, but they still mention the hassle.
