The amount of time I spend thinking "but what about their period" is almost embarrassing.

I suspect that's why I love Tamora Pierce's stuff so much- you know about periods, man. You KNOW.

I have to wonder if the full body catsuits are any better than the bathing suit type costumes. Is this part of the heroic sacrifice?

Honestly OP, you aren't alone. The thought has crossed my mind so many times. But being that the comics medium is still a little bit of an Old Boys Club, I doubt we'll ever hear about it.

Pretty much the same reason they rarely bring up using the bathroom. Although with Emma... Diamond form for a week.

Nico from Runaways is the only time I ever remember it specifically being brought up.

OTOH, I keep finding fic where Black Widow has debilitating cramps and surely that would get in the way of being a bad-ass assassin? I feel like she would have found something better than advil and a hot pad by now.

I worry about this too. But I think they do what I do and get a continuous pill. (Being a schoolteacher is like being a superhero in that way.)

I've thought about stuff like that too. Not specifically with superheroines*, though - more with female leads in adventure stories. Katniss Everdeen, Hermione Granger, Annabeth Chase, Sabriel, Jade Harley and Rose Lalonde, Korra, Katara...the list goes on and on.

It really is an interesting question. I wouldn't mind discussing it with anyone who has any ideas. But I mean you don't always get to pack tampons when you're whisked away on an adventure with no warning. Or what if they had their first period while on the adventure?

Now I want fic of this with some of the younger examples here - just out of pure curiosity about how they might handle a situation like that.

(I had my first period in sixth grade and I was fucking MORTIFIED. At the time I refused to even discuss it with anyone...what would I have done if I was travelling in an unknown land???)

There was an issue of Runaways that at least acknowledged that period exist though. One of the characters was able to activate her powers whenever her blood was spilled (meaning she often had to cut herself) and during one battle her powers activated seemingly without her spilling her own blood. When one character questioned this, she was like "Yeahhhhh, about that..."

I've also wondered about the same issue with Digimon. The girls were around the age when a lot of girls start their period and even if they did have tampons when they were tossed into the Digital world, they had to run out sometime...

The only story I saw actually address this with a female character was Berserk. Poor Casca got her period right when she was facing a foe and had to run and get to a safe place where she could "take care" of the issue. Of course Guts would find her there and cause an awkward moment when he thinks she's injured.

Yeah, I'd rather be a villain than a hero for that reason. You pretty much get to set your own hours. You can steal shit whenever you feel like, but heroes have jump to action at a moment's notice.

On second thought, I'm probably too lazy to be either one.

My question has always been how women successfully pretend they are men. Like Mulan. Women have "needs" men don't obviously. How did a Japanese warrior who was really a woman deal with all the related feminine concerns? How did the men fail to notice that she didn't pee standing up? What did she do when she had her period? Like the OP, I spend far too much time considering these questions for which I am sure there will never be an answer.

God, so THIS. TMI coming up: Recently, my period came a whole week early. First time that has happened in nearly 10 years. I use a menstrual cup normally, but I didn't have access to that - because I just happened to be on a 3 day trek through the Highlands. I improvised pads with the aid of a pair of scissors, a cotton T-shirt, and my emergency sewing kit. It worked remarkably well, too, or at least none of my companions went 'jesus, lady, there's blood all over you!'.
Anyway, point of that story was that in fiction, women get forced into ridiculous outfits, lost, kidnapped (or escape from being kidnapped), transported to other worlds, go on adventures/quests, etc. so often, that issues like these should crop up at least occassionally.

I've thought about this. I also ponder how characters like Rogue, who was supposedly nearly invulnerable and super strong, shaved. Like, does the super strong only account to their muscles and skin, or is their hair super strong too? Do they have to special order super adamantium razors or something?

Not everyone gets totally incapacitated by their period, I know I don't (some people are lucky enough to have really light ones)

I guess I get the curiosity, but you're pretty dim if you think a period will incapacitate most people. Or that everyone menstruates in a regular schedule.

I've always thought the same thing while playing video games. In Final Fantasy XII I've always wondered how the girls dealt with that while trekking around Ivalice for what could be weeks or possibly even months wearing rather impractical and skimpy clothes. At least they have a seemingly unlimited inventory, which sort of helps with the logistics of carrying supplies, but hey still travel though deserts, mountains, and uninhabited forests. Dissidia sounds like it would be worse, manikins are endless so it's hard to catch a break, the only shops are run by moogles, and it's quite the sausage fest.

I wonder if Wonder Woman even has one? Weren't the Amazons cursed with "no children" or something? (Can't remember if that was DCAU or comics too) And she was made from clay. I bet she doesn't.

Supergirl probably doesn't either, nor does Hawkgirl.

But now I'm really wondering about all of this. Those costumes just seem like such a pain in the ass during that time of the month.
