I don't think it would appeal to the average Capital citizen and so something would be given to Tributes to suppress it, similar to how the male contestants don't grow beards while in the arena. It would also be an unfair disadvantage, if only because of a greater ease in tracking female Tributes. Capital citizens are looking for a reality show, a prettified version of life, love, and violence with a side of gore. I don't see gross-out being a part of that.

It's also very possible that non-Career female Tributes typically have too low of a body fat percentage to have a period until they're well into their late teens. Malnourishment plays such a big role in Katniss' story that I see most girls in the District maturing far later than the average nowadays (which has lowered from past decades).

Lots of good points. I had forgotten about the beard thing - to me that seems like the best argument for the female tributes being given a hormone suppressant. It's just as well; thinking about the possibility of pregnancy during the games makes my mind go places I'd rather it didn't.

I remember seeing a video once about a female marathon runner who got her period. You could see it running down her legs and the male commentators were just hemming and hawing like "Uh, she seems to be having some difficulties..." She paused to mop it up a little but otherwise she just kept running. I think Katniss would be like that, acting like its no big deal, since she's from the districts.
