I've thought about Jade and Rose, too. Since they're both thirteen and have been for several months at the start of the story (and are probably physically even older than that, since they weren't newborn-sized when they were "born"), I'm guessing they are experienced, at least. But there are so many other issues to consider.
For them in particular, having periods while playing Sburb probably wasn't an issue because they were only playing it for about 24 hours. But Jade's room was destroyed, so what if any supplies she had were too? What was she going to do? How does she get stuff out there on Hellmurder Island, anyway? Plane drop, like with John's birthday present? I wonder if she could send Bec to get things. What am I saying, that probably is what she does. The funny thing is, now that she's on a three-year journey on a Prospitian battleship to the new universe, I'm not worried about it at all because I figure she can just raid Rose's house, and alchemize extras of whatever she finds there and keep a nice stash of it in her sylladex. I suppose if they had stayed in their session she could have asked Rose for a code, but man, that's always an awkward request to make.
Speaking of Rose, it seems that she would have the opposite issue. I can't imagine there would be anything on the trolls' meteor (unless Sgrub knew there would be a teenage human girl aboard at some point and was prepared, which to be fair is not out of the question) and unless she thought ahead and logged a code, she won't be able to get it, either. I wonder if she would ask Kanaya or Terezi whether there is a troll equivalent, and what kind of answer she would get. Ooh, I wonder if there's fic about that. I'd read it.
Also, it just occurred to me to wonder whether dreamselves get periods.

As for Jade and Rose, I wonder what would happen if they started theirs during Sburb, but even though they're also about that age the chances of that happening are pretty slim. If they started before hand and happened to be on it during the game they'd probably spend the ten seconds it would take to grab a stash.
HOWEVER, you've gotten me wondering now about dreamselves and also about trolls! Do trolls have periods? (I don't think they do. Their reproductive system and biology is arthropod-esque and maybe vaguely reptilian.) I want fic of that, of the humans explaining periods to the trolls (I actually love the idea of a general birds-and-the-bees forum thing and almost wrote it once; I should pick that back up; I love the ideas of their reactions to pregnancy and childbirth) and also maybe of fic with the alpha and beta kids - like, say, Roxy starts her period on her adventure and it's up to Rose to comfort and help her and provide her with supplies; Roxy might not actually know anything about it given that she's been isolated for a long time. Rose feels awkward since Roxy is basically her mom, but spurred on by remembering what beta!Roxy did to help her when she started hers back when everything was "normal". OR, one of the girls - Jane or Jade, preferably - has hers in a situation where Dirk has to be the one to help. He'd be totally chill with it, being all modern and stuff and not understanding why it makes everyone so uncomfortable to talk about it. Dave would be absolutely mortified and wouldn't show is face near Dirk for days.

(P.S. there is one good period-related fic I do know if you're familiar with ATLA and want me to rec. It's Azula having her period and Ty Lee explaining to her that no, she's not actually dying just because she's gushing blood.)

I just assume that trolls don't have periods, because why would they if they don't get pregnant? But Rose doesn't necessarily know that, so this could totally be how she finds out. The idea of a reproductive differences forum on the meteor is just the most hilarious thing, especially if Karkat is moderating it, like maybe in response to a particularly infuriating conversation with Dave or something. No, wait! Kanaya is moderating it, in response to Karkat's particularly infuriating conversation with Dave, and Karkat is horrified. I think Rose would be the most zen about it all, but would probably throw in a little misinformation for her own amusement, vis-a-vis her funerals explanation.
(Alternatively, trolls do have periods, and because I subscribe to the hermaphroditic biology theory, they all have periods.)
I hadn't thought about how Roxy's and Dirk's perspectives would be affected by their...upbringings, but now that you mention it. We know that the Condesce is completely grossed out by human reproduction, so she must have some kind of official opinion on periods. Even though I'd be really surprised if that ship hadn't sailed for Roxy (and Jane), the idea of a role reversal involving Rose is kind of intriguing - but what I'd want to see is post-Scratch Rose, pre-Scratch memories intact, preparing her house for Roxy's arrival and trying to be the mother she wishes pre-Scratch Roxy had been for her, even across the centuries.

This would definitely happen. (Dave would be all, "Isn't this stuff supposed to weird gay guys out? He's being chill just to piss me off, I know it.")

(Is Dirk actually gay tho? I thought he was sort of all "labels are dumb I just like people" - so functionally bi or pan, most likely.)
You should check out the fic that an anon rec'd to me somewhere in this thread. The pesterlog fic was hilarious and really IC and basically is one of my favorite HS fics now (seriously).
ETA: using this icon makes me think of another thing. I love the Rose x Kanaya pairing and just love their interactions and now want fic of Rose explaining to Kan what a period is and why human female bodies are different from troll female bodies.

Malnourishment plays such a big role in Katniss' story that I see most girls in the District maturing far later than the average nowadays (which has lowered from past decades).
