I've thought about stuff like that too. Not specifically with superheroines*, though - more with female leads in adventure stories. Katniss Everdeen, Hermione Granger, Annabeth Chase, Sabriel, Jade Harley and Rose Lalonde, Korra, Katara...the list goes on and on.

It really is an interesting question. I wouldn't mind discussing it with anyone who has any ideas. But I mean you don't always get to pack tampons when you're whisked away on an adventure with no warning. Or what if they had their first period while on the adventure?

Now I want fic of this with some of the younger examples here - just out of pure curiosity about how they might handle a situation like that.

(I had my first period in sixth grade and I was fucking MORTIFIED. At the time I refused to even discuss it with anyone...what would I have done if I was travelling in an unknown land???)

*yeah, I made that word up. sorry

You wake up and find yourself in a fantasy land of wizards, witches, and talking lions.

You have to poop. Like, right now.

what do

Hermione is the one character where I DON'T worry about how she gets through her period. Accio Tampax!

Okay, true. And I bet they have period-related spells, too. Maybe they can just magic all the endometrium out of their body once it starts, and throw it away.

The character in Doris Egan's Gate of Ivory had a similar problem--only she was an anthropology grad student who'd been stranded on another planet and basically forced to go native when her funding dried up, and when her hosts had to go adventuring, she was along for the ride. IIRC, she hadn't even had a period since she'd become old enough for a contraceptive implant--which of course expired at the most inconvenient possible time. She was horrified when someone offered her tampons and explained what you do with them. How barbaric!

I'd be horrified too, if I had absolutely no precedence for such a thing and didn't even know what a tampon was. wow.

More details on that series? What's the premise?

Well that's cool. I'd never heard it before (not that I remember - could be subconscious etc.) but I guess it's pretty obvious.

I read this fanfic where Hermione got her first period in the first year the day of the troll incident, and that's why she spent hours in the bathroom crying after Ron said she had no friends. THAT'S WHY SHE TOOK IT SO HARD.

In fairness, with Annabeth, she probably has like...a 'Quest bag' all packed up and ready to go 24/7 [Or, that time Hermes packed for them, I'm betting he thought to include since...you know. God of travel].

...Though I do kinda wonder what would have happened if Katniss had been on her period during the Hunger Games first book.
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-07-01 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
I can see that with Annabeth, but idk about Hermes. You might be right about the travel thing, but I'm not sure he's used to packing for humans/demigods. Especially female ones.

Then again, maybe I'm not giving him enough credit. We don't get as much characterization from him as some of the other gods in the story, so it's hard for me to say.

I think Katniss has one of the most interesting scenarios. Though I can kind of see the Capital producing some kind of magical medicine to give the female tributes before the Games to block their periods. And maybe even prevent cramps and other nasty side-effects, to make the playing field more even. And honestly, who'd want to see a girl bleeding during the Games? That sounds callous, but if you think of the context of the story...part of the purpose of the Games is entertainment, and I don't see the rich, spoiled elite of Panem wanting something like that to ruin their enjoyment.

omg katniss's period

i so wondered about katniss's period (and the others too really.)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
She very well might have been too malnourished to have regular periods. There was a lot of emphasis on the lack of food in most of the Districts the first book.

Not really adventure series, but periods and period pain are a massive plot point in Anne Bishop's Black Jewels Trilogy. Though it never gets down to what, exactly, the women do with the blood.

I've definitely thought about what tributes - not just Katniss - would do. It must happen. Do the gamemakers try to be discreet, I wonder? What if a girl gets her first period during the Games? (Oh wow, I just made myself sad.) I suppose they could drug all the female tributes up so it isn't an issue, but it also seems like the kind of thing that would add the sort of drama the Capitol loves.

I've thought about Jade and Rose, too. Since they're both thirteen and have been for several months at the start of the story (and are probably physically even older than that, since they weren't newborn-sized when they were "born"), I'm guessing they are experienced, at least. But there are so many other issues to consider.

For them in particular, having periods while playing Sburb probably wasn't an issue because they were only playing it for about 24 hours. But Jade's room was destroyed, so what if any supplies she had were too? What was she going to do? How does she get stuff out there on Hellmurder Island, anyway? Plane drop, like with John's birthday present? I wonder if she could send Bec to get things. What am I saying, that probably is what she does. The funny thing is, now that she's on a three-year journey on a Prospitian battleship to the new universe, I'm not worried about it at all because I figure she can just raid Rose's house, and alchemize extras of whatever she finds there and keep a nice stash of it in her sylladex. I suppose if they had stayed in their session she could have asked Rose for a code, but man, that's always an awkward request to make.

Speaking of Rose, it seems that she would have the opposite issue. I can't imagine there would be anything on the trolls' meteor (unless Sgrub knew there would be a teenage human girl aboard at some point and was prepared, which to be fair is not out of the question) and unless she thought ahead and logged a code, she won't be able to get it, either. I wonder if she would ask Kanaya or Terezi whether there is a troll equivalent, and what kind of answer she would get. Ooh, I wonder if there's fic about that. I'd read it.

Also, it just occurred to me to wonder whether dreamselves get periods.

It's not impossible Katara hasn't started her period yet. Avatar is sort-of 19h century, right? The average age has gone way down since then, I think. Otherwise damn that's gotta be awkward. o_o Though I guess Water Tribe woman probably have a system for long hunting trips or whatever?

Sabriel likewise. That girl's gotta have a system. :P

I used to wonder about this on the first season or two of Lost. I wasn't sure how long they'd been on the island in those early days, so I suppose it was possible for the women to get by on what they could salvage from everyone's luggage for a while. After that, I guess they got a hold of a stash of DHARMA pads and tampons?

Do the Doctors' female companions have to make a point of getting him to stop at a store every now and then to pick up some "stuff" and then get quietly frustrated when he can't land the TARDIS in the right place/time or he gets distracted and takes them on some adventure?
