lol, I'm going to sound like a SJW. Racism doesn't work in both direction. Prejudice, bigotry, and discrimination do. Except for discrimination, those words are usually used for talking about a person, not an institution. But it was ONTD. I left after the first page, tbh.

Okay. But it's still got an overwhelming institutional issues, which is why it can't be used. Prejudice and bigotry don't have institutional connotations, which is why they can. The institutional nature is what's important. I probably should have made that clear. I had to keep discrimination out, because it has legal connotations that do imply institutional issues, but is generally neutral as a word.

I find it odd that it boils down to language and semantics. I agree that there is a difference between the terms racism, bigotry, and discrimination; however there are a lot of people who don't see the difference and it's used as a shield for their argument.

If a PoC says "I hate all white people, they should DIAF" and someone else comes around and says "that's racist!" Quite a few times I've seen the argument shot down with a "I'm a PoC, it is impossible for me to be racist, check your privilege." It usually leaves the other person baffled as to how it's okay for a PoC to talk that way about another group of people. I don't think they realize that to many people there is a vast difference between the term "racist" and "bigot."

But then again, those are the same people who probably think they've earned a "right" to discriminate against others because they've been discriminated against. I personally don't believe that two wrongs make a right, but if someone is going to go down that road, I can't help that. But I sure as hell won't be trying to have a rational conversation with someone like that. Let them stew in their own hate.

Well, I agree that most people use the confusion of the distinction between racism and bigotry/prejudice as a shield to protect themselves on being called out for it. But an asshole is an asshole to me (although to people who have experienced continuous racism, both overt and more subtle, I understand the impulse if not the validity of saying something like that).

Although, if the discussion is on why only a certain people of color should use a slur that is said as an insult against them, and a bunch of white people decide to talk about why they should in fact be able to say such ethnic slur because it's not fair otherwise, I don't know, that impulse becomes more valid to me as an expression of frustration. Over-generalized, but frustration all the same. They should still be able to take being called out on it however.
