Well, some of them are and some of them aren't. Your town might be more on the "aren't" side. And frankly, as long as you are actually being treated well, why do you need to know what goes on inside someone else's head? Pro-tip: negative and positive things about everyone, including themselves. Focus on how people treat you and not their motives for doing so and you might get some confidence back. Seriously. If you start having these thoughts, stop yourself and remember what people have done for you.

But I would like to say that you are now armed with some knowledge if people do start acting a problematic way.
