You sound like an ONTD member. This is not a compliment.

You cared enough to make this statement. Even the smallest amount of effort is a still an effort.

I like "manly" things, why can't guy like "girly" things?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing wrong with breaking social norms. I remember reading the author pages of Fruits Basket and Kare Kano where the author talked about the male fans who sent letters detailing how embarressed they were buying the books. They are great stories so it makes me sad that (mostly) guys pressure each other about things like this. You are not alone in your feelings and you are no less masculine for liking things that have a largely female audience.

Because femininity is weak and disgusting and all should aspire to be masculine, don'tcha know.

Bah, I forgot the < /sarc > tag again. Dammit.

protip: whenever someone includes the phrase "don'tcha know" in their comment, it is normally safe to assume they are speaking sarcastically

I also like things many would consider "guy" things, and run into similar problems with my friends being judged who like MLP, for example. :x One of my friends who loves MLP also adores Fruits Basket...but his friends give him crap for liking girl things (it's "jokingly" but said in a way where I can tell they still think it's shameful to some degree, and it pisses me off)

No one judges me for liking the things I like.

And it is rooted in sexism. Because it's "bad" for men to stoop to the level of liking feminine things, but desirable for a woman to like manly things - that's considered a step up for her. It's gross tbh.

Re: I like "manly" things, why can't guy like "girly" things?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
But there are definite limits to the "woman liking manly things" side. I get judged a lot because about 95% of my hobbies and interests are considered "male". I dress like a teenage boy (the mens section has the best t-shirts and their pants actually have usable pockets!) and am in what is considered a male career. I get a lot of shit for it.

Because women liking some manly things is cool and strong and whatever, but if you like too much then you're just a weirdo or a butch dyke or some other supposed insulty thing. :\

You can like as many "male" hobbies and interests as you want so long as your appearance is conventionally feminine and attractive.

Sigh, society.

Yeah, good point. And I'm sorry to hear that you have to put up with all that. :(

Thanks for pointing that out. I used to wear guys' clothes a lot more often for some of the same reasons - more comfortable, lots of pockets, etc. I don't really any more, but I get where you're coming from.

Sometimes I wish people would just shut up. D:

I didn't knew it was written by a male tbh. But then again I didn't really cared.

On another note, very nice choice of "waifu". Francis is perfect :p (I may say this out of pure patriotism héhé).

Some social norms need to be broken and this is one proof why.

As a fellow male fan of Hetalia, I salute you!

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
This is why it's important to look into the source instead of just judging it by what all the fangirls do/draw/write about. I wouldn't bat an eye if a guy says that he's into Hetalia.

It's a bit sad how many guys have been scared away from the series because of the fangirls. I was showing my boyfriend some stuff I got in the mail from Right Stuf the other day, and 2 of the items were Hetalia-related. Season 4 and vol. 3 of the manga. He kinda balked at them, and I was just like "dude no give it a try you'll actually like it". He's huge into history, especially WWII, and loves the sort of humor Hetalia has. So I grabbed vol. 3 and flipped to some random page and handed it to him, and within moments he was cracking up. I dug out my copies of vol. 1 and 2 as well and pulled some selected strips related to nations he's interested in and whose characters I think he'd like, and well. Pretty quick I had him dying laughing at the strips with Hungary and Prussia as kids.

Because of the rabid yaoi fangirl fanbase, he was actually convinced that Hetalia was BL. Yeah there are some pretty gay strips, but when guys pretty commonly think they're going to pick up a volume of it and find guys kissing on any random page they may turn to, it's a bit sad. That was his impression and I've heard other guys voice the same thing.

But really the actual series has plenty in it for guys. I wish more dudes would just give it a chance.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, it seems like the rabid fangirls have scared a lot of people off at this point.
nachtmusik: (ooh Miss Hungary ooh)

[personal profile] nachtmusik 2012-07-02 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. It's sad, but I don't really blame anyone either.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
For some reason I'm not sorry that a couple of homophobes don't want to read it.
nachtmusik: (No. Nein. Nyet. Non.)

[personal profile] nachtmusik 2012-07-02 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
....Uh. It's not exactly homophobic to not want to read a comic about guys hooking up if you aren't into that. There are plenty of reasons that aren't homophobia to not want to read BL. Yeah, guys whose reaction to m/m stuff is "OMG EW GUYS KISSING!!!11" are kind of disgusting people IMO, but uh. Not everyone is interested in romance period. If someone is assuming Hetalia is about a bunch of gay guys who happen to be countries macking on each other and they aren't into stories like that, that is perfectly valid, really. Especially since. You know. Most BL is basically idealized mush aimed at teen girls and young women anyway. I used to read a lot of actual BL and it tends to be bad chick lit at best, insulting at worst ("ooh Mr Seme I love you so much even though you raped me!" for instance). So yeah no not going to assume anyone is homophobic for avoiding the BL genre.
