But.... that sounds pretty feminist? The fact that you want the female character as an awesome character rather than just a fanservicy character?

Also a bit unrelated but I didn't know you could play as a female character. This pique my interest in the game.

Go try it! It's an amazing experience with a female main character. (Bro!Main Character is... not the best because they hired a crappy voice actor and he just can't bring Shepard to life.)

Ah, I think I will! It looks super interesting and the idea of a female character in a setting like this sounds really fun!

(Also Hao icon! ♥)

IMO it turned out so well because FemShep was obviously meant to be secondary - she uses male motion capture data etc, but that also means that 99% of the non-romance lines are the same and they didn't spend any resources on making her "different". (Don't even get me started on female mo-cap - I played Dragon Age 2 and my warrior who tends to wear the heaviest armour she can find keeps wiggling her butt while walking in a way that makes my head hurt. Gah!)

One thing: the gameplay of ME1 can feel a bit dated, but that vastly improves with ME2. Just in case you don't like it at first. C:

(Hahah... I was too lazy to bring over all my other icons from LJ, since I only use my Dreamwidth account for FS. But yes, Hao is awesome.)

There are some rumblings about the ending of the third game, as you may or may not have heard, but basically, the overall ME game tries to give you a certain amount of latitude in a lot of choices. You can chose the characters gender and racial makeup, and other then affecting some of your love interests and referential pronouns, it's largely played the same: Femshep, as she's generally referred to, wears the same kinda armor, has the same attributes as maleshep, etc.

And as you see, gets cover and trailer time, since canon more or less assumes either shep is valid.

Ooooohhh ohhhhoooo wow that trailer was awesome!

And I might have heard some of the stuff about the ending, but I wasn't really paying attention to it! Now I'll have to look for them, though. But this game looks awesome and is def. on my To Play list.

without knowing the controversy, I think your better off. Lets just say the original endings were confusing, and the new endings, while there's still debate, are better then the old ones.

You'll be missing a lot though if you don't play mass effect 1 and 2 first though. It's designed as a trilogy, with your save games actually loaded onto the next one cause your decisions have repercussions.

You can make her look super-tough & butch too, which my gf particularly appreciates, as that is soooooo unusual in any medium. (You can make her look feminine too.) Pretty good voice actor.

That's awesome! Being able to customize characters is such a HUGE bonus in any game! And I searched for dude!Shepperd's voice and yeah, her voice sounds so much better! The voice actress really knows how to deliver her lines!

Most sandbox-y games let you make your own character. Dragon Age, Skyrim, Saints Row, Fallout. Personally I like Saints Row because each voice they let you choose has a different personality and makes different jokes and conversation with the NPCs. It makes you want to play different types.
