Eh. I don't like sexism, but I don't like a lot of self-styled feminists either.

Whenever people wonder why other women don't call themselves feminists (especially if they then do the whole false dilemma "you're a feminist or a misogynist and there is no middle ground" a la Ani DiFranco), I wonder if they say the same things about other labels, too.

I fully believe in equality for all, but you'll never catch me saying I'm a feminist. I've had too many bad experiences stemming from encounters with self-styled "feminists"- like having them downplay my experience of being nearly beaten to death because my attackers were girls, watching a "feminist" therapist reduce my husband to tears when he tried to seek help for PTSD stemming from him being molested as a child by a female babysitter, being told in college that my brother was going to go on a rape rampage if I let him see my dormitory...

Yeah, if that's what being a feminist is about, then fuck no. I just say I believe in equality. Because I do. None of this gender war bullshit that so many online "feminists" (and even IRL ones) espouse.

While I doubt this is how the OP meant it because it's usually meant in an "ew, I'm not an icky feminazi" way, you could be completely for women's rights and equality while not being the biggest fan of the feminist movement itself, which has a history of being very exclusionary towards trans women and non-white women. In THEORY, feminist just means someone who believes in gender equality, but theory=/=reality and while I still consider myself a feminist, I can understand that being spat on by a movement all the time might make you not want to identify with that movement, even if you like what they do IN THEORY.
Like, idk, I'm against child trafficking and shit, but I'm not going to support Kony 2012, because while they have a good idea at the center of it and I'm hardly pro-Kony because he's a horrible person, the organization is a fuckpile of LOL NO THANKS.
I guess it depends if you're using feminist to mean the hypothetical idea or feminist to mean the feminist movement.

There are any number of reasons a person might not choose to identify with the feminist label.

For me, I have two major reasons. One, I've had a fair amount of association with SJW-type feminists and would prefer not to be associated with them. Two, I don't believe in everything that the majority of feminists believe. The major difference is that I'm pro-life. And I'm willing to bet that if I *did* claim to be a feminist I'd get a lot of "but you're not a REAL feminist!!1!" because I don't think abortion is okay.

I just believe what I believe. I believe all people are equal and equally deserving of life, liberty, and other basic rights and of being treated with respect and that it's ok to be who you are and like what you like.

I was enjoying this secret until the "bonus" part... I think it's cool that I can flip the cover and have the Shepard I play facing out at me, but I don't get angry when people who play the male Shepard want to see their version. If I can happily have my female version, I'm not going to get angry when someone else wants to have their male version. No reason to get upset, OP, just point out that the cover can be reversed to show the male Shepard. Then they have the version that they want while you have the version you want. No harm, no foul.

I just want to make sure that people are aware that for once in video game history there is a female that is JUST as capable and strong as a man.

There are people who honestly think that Bioware (with the ME franchise) was the first company who introduced non-sexualized, strong and independent female protagonists...

It's pretty sad that you feel the need to include a caveat about "not being a feminist or anything." If you believe that everyone deserves equal rights, that's the definition of a feminist. If you feel uncomfortable calling yourself that, help change people's perceptions of what feminists are and what they do by standing up for the word and what you think. Hiding behind disclaimers just strengthens the power of people who say "feminazi" with a straight face and get away with it.

Are you really doing FemShep any favors by saying that?

I do the EXACT same thing when I hang around video game shops. Every time I come across a copy of ME3 whose cover I can flip, I immediately do it. And I haven't even played any ME game. I just love the idea.

I love that you do that but it makes me sad that people actually ask if there's one with a man on the cover. I love that Bioware did a reversible cover and that they finally did a couple game trailers with FemShep too this time around! Hopefully this trend continues with their games.

Once again I've managed to make a secret in which one line gets blown out of proportion and the whole thing goes to hell. I'll admit that I had a misunderstanding of the word "feminist" until now, but in all fairness most of what I had learned about it had come from this community (and similar ones) and the insanity that comes with it.

But seriously, I didn't mean any offense whatsoever, please don't take it that way. I can admit that I used a word that I should have researched more before I assumed it was ALWAYS pro woman & anti man. Carry on, everybody.

Have not read beyond the first couple of comments, but I think I see where this is going.

If you care to know why I don't call myself a feminist even though I agree with the principal idea:

Count how many people here Congratualte or show appreciation for the OP's gesture compared to the people reaming her out for not conforming to their label.

I may be wrong about the ballance. Maybe it'll prove me wrong.

It's cool and all that the cover is reversible, but personally, I choose to use the male Shepard as my own cover because I hate the default FemShep redesign. The original FemShep was dramatically cooler than the new one and frankly, I'm a little pissed they thought they should change her into what she is now.

People would be outraged if they redesigned the male Shepard right before they ended the series, but it's okay for the girl? It's pretty much bullshit.
