Eh. I don't like sexism, but I don't like a lot of self-styled feminists either.

Whenever people wonder why other women don't call themselves feminists (especially if they then do the whole false dilemma "you're a feminist or a misogynist and there is no middle ground" a la Ani DiFranco), I wonder if they say the same things about other labels, too.

Isn't that like a person who believes in the Bible and in the Christian God not calling themselves "a christian" because they don't like the Westboro Baptist Church?

Or a straight person saying they're not "straight" because they don't like homophobes? Or a gay person saying they're not "gay" because they aren't stereotypical?

I get that there are a lot of racial and trans* reasons a person wouldn't want to associate with feminism, but a throwaway line about not being a feminist in an otherwise very feminist secret doesn't seem like the place where that would be brought up?

I'd just prefer not to choose a label. I'd admit I don't like that it's connected to a gender and claiming it's for equality. All the names cropping up because of that just seem like they're headed towards the ridiculous subsets like we get when people try to label themselves in the LGBT community. More and more labels for ever little nuance of your being.

It'd be cool if being human was enough.

(Though personally if I had to choose any "movement" at the moment I'd join the MRAs.)

I fully believe in equality for all, but you'll never catch me saying I'm a feminist. I've had too many bad experiences stemming from encounters with self-styled "feminists"- like having them downplay my experience of being nearly beaten to death because my attackers were girls, watching a "feminist" therapist reduce my husband to tears when he tried to seek help for PTSD stemming from him being molested as a child by a female babysitter, being told in college that my brother was going to go on a rape rampage if I let him see my dormitory...

Yeah, if that's what being a feminist is about, then fuck no. I just say I believe in equality. Because I do. None of this gender war bullshit that so many online "feminists" (and even IRL ones) espouse.

While I doubt this is how the OP meant it because it's usually meant in an "ew, I'm not an icky feminazi" way, you could be completely for women's rights and equality while not being the biggest fan of the feminist movement itself, which has a history of being very exclusionary towards trans women and non-white women. In THEORY, feminist just means someone who believes in gender equality, but theory=/=reality and while I still consider myself a feminist, I can understand that being spat on by a movement all the time might make you not want to identify with that movement, even if you like what they do IN THEORY.
Like, idk, I'm against child trafficking and shit, but I'm not going to support Kony 2012, because while they have a good idea at the center of it and I'm hardly pro-Kony because he's a horrible person, the organization is a fuckpile of LOL NO THANKS.
I guess it depends if you're using feminist to mean the hypothetical idea or feminist to mean the feminist movement.

No, I totes get this and actually mentioned it in another comment. But someone not identifying as feminist for legit reasons probably wouldn't mention it in this circumstance, while someone who is scared of people thinking she's a man-hating dyke would.

There are any number of reasons a person might not choose to identify with the feminist label.

For me, I have two major reasons. One, I've had a fair amount of association with SJW-type feminists and would prefer not to be associated with them. Two, I don't believe in everything that the majority of feminists believe. The major difference is that I'm pro-life. And I'm willing to bet that if I *did* claim to be a feminist I'd get a lot of "but you're not a REAL feminist!!1!" because I don't think abortion is okay.

I just believe what I believe. I believe all people are equal and equally deserving of life, liberty, and other basic rights and of being treated with respect and that it's ok to be who you are and like what you like.

I am pro-choice, but I totally understand you. I was pro-life for a long time when I was younger and it used to drive me crazy that people would assume that had to do with men or with religion. Actually it had to do with having a disability and with being born prematurely. The preemie thing made me uncomfortable with the idea that you're a baby if you're out and a fetus if you're in -- I just happened to become a person quickly? It didn't make sense to me. And disability made me really leery of some people's reasons for aborting (and still does.) I ultimately decided that making abortion illegal would hurts more than it would help, but I still feel really strange sometimes when I hear people talk about "lumps of cells" or "on demand and without apology!" and sneering at people who find the whole thing more complicated.

So... I hope this doesn't begin any wank. but let me just say I disagree with you but don't think that means there's something wrong with you or horrible about you. For whatever it's worth. :-)

I think when she says "feminist", what she is referring to is the type of radical feminism that doesn't just want equality, but superiority. But idk, I can only speculate. There is a lot of misinformation and etc. surrounding the term 'feminism'.

Extreme radfems tend to be seperatists - refusing to engage with men altogether.

Whenever someone criticizes so-called radical feminism for aiming toward making women superior to men I get suspicious. There are valid criticisms of some branches of feminism. Wanting to be superior to men is not a valid one.
