(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 12:33 am (UTC)(link)Once again I've managed to make a secret in which one line gets blown out of proportion and the whole thing goes to hell. I'll admit that I had a misunderstanding of the word "feminist" until now, but in all fairness most of what I had learned about it had come from this community (and similar ones) and the insanity that comes with it.
But seriously, I didn't mean any offense whatsoever, please don't take it that way. I can admit that I used a word that I should have researched more before I assumed it was ALWAYS pro woman & anti man. Carry on, everybody.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 01:10 am (UTC)(link)I'm really glad that I've become involved in feminism and met so many wonderful people in the feminist community. For a lot of people like me it's a safe place where they can be among people who understand them, and where we don't have to be around the stupid sexist things that have been beaten into our heads about women all of our lives. It's a movement that's meant to unite women and help them, not alienate them and contribute to even more hate.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)I don't see it on F!S so much but other communities like ontd_political are explicitly man-hating. There was a clusterfuck of a post not too long ago in a post where the article was shaming bisexual women for having sex with men, saying that if they were good feminists they'd give up having relationships with males entirely.
It degenerated quickly into statements like "Men are the enemy" (actual quote), understandably upset bisexuals and pansexuals stating that they should be able to have liaisons with whoever they like without being seen as 'traitors to the cause' and other general fuckery.
If "Men are the enemy" is not anti-man then I don't know what is, and the sad thing is that these opinions aren't even the minority.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)I think it's very telling that your biggest problem with it was that the posters were being 'man-hating', and not that they were basically shaming women for not being political enough with their romantic relationships.

I've known very smart women who didn't "agree" with feminism, even knowing the full meaning and history, because they thought women had achieved complete equality and respect in the 90's or something. I get the impression you've noticed that this isn't always the case, so you're already ahead. No matter what kind of shit gets attached to the word, I think it's generally a positive force and improves everyone's quality of life (not just women, because everyone benefits from an environment where mothers and sisters are valued and respected).
um, tl;dr: feminism can be positive, not negative :)
