Re: About the het vs. slash vs. femmeslash vs. gen thing

I've never understood it, but my reason is because I don't get what being a "slash fan" or a "het fan" has to do with *shipping*. Shipping is when you, you know, ship two (or more) specific characters together in a particular relationship. You like it or are intrigued by it - or just got a random urge to read fic of it - for whatever reason. I really doubt people are going around supporting a pairing or getting into on the basis that it's het or that it's femslash.

Except they do.

That's a rather cynical outlook on fandom. If they do, then when people call themselves a "slash fan" it would be equal to liking all slash, same for "het fan", etc.

Hm. I think it works more like sexual orientation does. Maybe I only like women that way, or have a strong preference for dating women rather than men. But that doesn't mean every woman I see is going to be someone I want to date.

So you can only like slash or whatever, but you're not going to end up shipping every boy/boy pair that exists.

It makes a bit of sense to me. I'm gay, and I'll admit to being more intrigued by shows/pairings that apply to me. When you're in a group that never gets screen time, sometimes it's nice to be able to find a character or pairing that's like you.

Oh, I do understand that side of it, definitely. :) I also understand how what is attractive to a person - I don't mean the sex of the person, but the characteristics and dynamic - will play a role. It just seems like it gets summed up a little too easily sometimes.
