I love happy endings, but even so I think it wasn't a very satisfying ending. Plus, it wasn't really that happy. Madoka and Homura could never be together again, and Homura doesn't even remember the girl she gave her entire life for, and the rest of the magical girls still had to fight those demons. /YMMV

I personally enjoyed it because, unlike a lot of anime endings, it seemed to me like there was an actual cohesive end. In a lot of shows, I find they kind of peter out near the end, like they didn't really plan well for an ending, and sometimes are just like "throw some weird stuff in there".

I know this cohesive end is true of most good animes, but I just found it really refreshing and emotionally satisfying. Maybe because I thought Honmura still remembered Madoka? Because of that thing with her little brother and all. (If it is canon that she doesn't, whateva, FANON FOREVS.)

...Actually, Homura remembers her quite well. In fact, one translation is, "I think because it's you, you'll remember." That's also why, when Madoka's brother is all, "Madoka! Madoka!" that Homura nods and why she wants to give the ribbons back.

Whaaaa? A huge part of the ending is the fact that Homura is the only person who remembers Madoka.

Anyway, I liked the ending, and a lot of that is because, as you mention, it's not a particularly happy ending when you look at it. Magical girls still suffer; the only real difference is that now, there is someone who cares for them, who makes certain that their grief isn't what defines their existence. I thought that was a really beautiful idea--that even with all the power Madoka's wish granted her, she couldn't stop suffering. But she could ease the burden of it, and that was a miracle in it's own right.

But, I can understand other people would find it unsatisfying. Actually, now that I think about it, I haven't seen much detailed discussion about the ending (maybe I'm not looking in the right places?) usually people just say they loved it, or disliked it, without really talking about the reasons behind it.
