Whaaaa? A huge part of the ending is the fact that Homura is the only person who remembers Madoka.

Anyway, I liked the ending, and a lot of that is because, as you mention, it's not a particularly happy ending when you look at it. Magical girls still suffer; the only real difference is that now, there is someone who cares for them, who makes certain that their grief isn't what defines their existence. I thought that was a really beautiful idea--that even with all the power Madoka's wish granted her, she couldn't stop suffering. But she could ease the burden of it, and that was a miracle in it's own right.

But, I can understand other people would find it unsatisfying. Actually, now that I think about it, I haven't seen much detailed discussion about the ending (maybe I'm not looking in the right places?) usually people just say they loved it, or disliked it, without really talking about the reasons behind it.
