I do really love Neil Gaiman to death, but I know he's said things like "just make up your own stories" while writing a Sherlock Holmes/HP Lovecraft tribute, or using gods as characters.
I'm not saying derived characters or stories are bad, actually they can be really good!! I find it really confusing that people can't see how little difference it makes.
. Although I do think there's a really "gray area" (coughpun) between something that's written as an homage vs. something that's heavily reliant on the source material, it's totally case by case. Like even more porn/smut centered fics, that really could stand on its own. IDK, I mean obviously there's a certain line, but that's why most fics are free. But I think even subtle shifting of a story can pull it from "copyright infringement" into "best seller list", and it doesn't really cheapen the story at all.
