You know, I used to think this too. But, I had this weird epiphany last night that changed my opinion. And, feel free to counter me, because I'm up for hearing other opinions on this. What about all those books that play around with characters with lapsed copyrights or characters from fairy tales, etc.? Like 'Wicked' or all those 'Pride and Predjudice and [insert killer being]' books? Wouldn't those books be considered fanfiction? The authors are using settings and characters created by another and putting their own spin on things.

The difference with the author of '50 Shades' is that Twilight isn't public domain. In 50 years, or if and whenever, the work falls into public domain, I can publish my 'Twilight' based sci-fi which features Bella as a one-eyed space pirate protecting a family of Androids (the Cullens) in a universe that has outlawed artifical life forms. Until then, it'll have to be Della and the Mullens' adventures, because using direct and identifiable Twilight canon is a violation of Meyers intellectual property rights. Just being inspired by Twilight (like the author of '50 Shades') doesn't mean she can't publish her work as long as she revises any recognizable canon bits. She may have been inspired, but it sounds like '50 Shades' is pretty far removed from its inspiration.

nayrt

Bella as a one-eyed space pirate protecting a family of Androids (the Cullens) in a universe that has outlawed artifical life forms.

I would totally read that book. Even if it was Della and the Mullens.

Also, "Della and the Mullens" would be a good band name.

I think Della and Mullens would play a fusion of Appalachian Bluegrass (WITH the addition of a jug) and modern indie folk (like, the Decemberists). Oh, man, that sounds awesome.

IA so hard. It grinds my gears when people act like derived fiction (fan fiction) is offensive/rude while consuming published goods that are filled with regurgitated plots, tropes, characters, settings, etc.

I do really love Neil Gaiman to death, but I know he's said things like "just make up your own stories" while writing a Sherlock Holmes/HP Lovecraft tribute, or using gods as characters.

I'm not saying derived characters or stories are bad, actually they can be really good!! I find it really confusing that people can't see how little difference it makes.

. Although I do think there's a really "gray area" (coughpun) between something that's written as an homage vs. something that's heavily reliant on the source material, it's totally case by case. Like even more porn/smut centered fics, that really could stand on its own. IDK, I mean obviously there's a certain line, but that's why most fics are free. But I think even subtle shifting of a story can pull it from "copyright infringement" into "best seller list", and it doesn't really cheapen the story at all.

I had a similar epiphany recently while reading a very popular AU fic (which I usually don't read, and I have no idea why I'm reading this one), which is actually well-written and meticulously plotted. I stopped for a minute and thought, "Why isn't there a book like this? Because I would pay for it."
The only reason this 50 Shades bullshit really bothers me is that it's BAD fanfiction. There is a lot of good fic out there. This shouldn't be the bit that gets a multi-million-dollar publishing/film deal.

What was this fic? Because I'll read anything that's well written.

It annoys me that people keep acting like it's the first book ever to mention sex. So many articles about "women reading stuff with sex!!!!" Newsflash, writers - there are TONS of books with explicit sex scenes. This happened to get popular, probably only because of the Twilight connection, and people are acting like it's a huge shocking scandal. UGH.

It's like no one have ever heard of Harlequin before!

My mom read, like, mystery/romance things that had pretty explicit sex. She had them on the back of the toilet for bathtime reading and I'd furtively read them and turn to the sex scenes (skip to page 100, flip back or forward 20 pages). It was all really exciting to my curious 9 year self.

LOL, I like that there's a formula to where you'll find the sex scenes.

Was any of it kinky sex, or technically dub-con, out of curiosity?

My favorite one (the one I remember the best) was pretty vanilla, but pretty explicit. The kinkiest thing that happens is, in the last chapter, her love interest fingers her up against the half painted nursery wall while she's heavily pregnant. I know it's not that kinky, but it certainly seemed so to a kid.

I wish I could remember the title. If I had to describe the plot I'd only be able to describe the sex scenes!

It would be considered fanfiction, yes, but a) it's obviously supposed to be fanfiction and b) it hasn't been published on the internet for thousands (do I wish I were kidding. These super popular Twilight fics always get tons of reviews) of people to read and review. The latter is the skeevy thing here. If she had just for herself written a Twilight AU story and then published it with different names, go ahead, I wouldn't care.

Also, when you read 50 shades, it's quite obviously based on Twilight because you know it's based on Twilight. If you didn't, you may complain about the similar dynamic, but you'd brush it off as exploitation of a trend, not plagiarism. However, this was not just written with the Twilight characters in mind, it was also published on the internet as Twilight fanfiction.
