(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 02:55 am (UTC)(link)I like it because it validates everything the anime was getting at. It was pretty obvious this anime was about what Madoka will wish for and we know it was going to be something huge, especially we are constantly reminded that Madoka had the power to warp the universe due to Homura's timeline hopping. But we were clueless of how she was going to solve the problem.
Each magical girl was a lesson for her: Mami being the one who introduces to her to the whole of Magical Girls, Sayaka and Kyouko teaching her the dangers of making wishes that you are not prepared for and Homura to remind her the selfless dedication and courage to protect the ones.
And it was interesting with Kyubey baiting her, especially unloading the history of Magical Girls to make her wish out of desperation and despair so he can get her energy from her transformation into Krimhild Gretchen.
It wasn't a "cheap" ending or Deus Ex Machina ending that usually plague the Magical Girl genre (oh Sailor Moon and your cheap as hell deaths every season finale) because it satisfied every problem in that series: saving the Universe from Heat Death, protecting humanity's progress, and most importantly, saved the Magical Girls from a Fate Worse than Death and have their efforts be in vain (which was the reconstruction in this series).
Seriously, what will be a better ending that satisfied all of those and NOT look like it's cheap or a Deus Ex Machina and not violate the themes of this series?
