My partner agrees with you. Does that count?

The appeal is because not everyone thinks endings need to be 100% tragic and grimdark to be effective.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I love happy endings, but even so I think it wasn't a very satisfying ending. Plus, it wasn't really that happy. Madoka and Homura could never be together again, and Homura doesn't even remember the girl she gave her entire life for, and the rest of the magical girls still had to fight those demons. /YMMV

I've seen a lot of people who didn't like the ending, myself included. Don't worry, you're not alone in your opinion.

IA with you.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, you're not alone. I liked a lot of things about the show, but I felt like the ending was a huge letdown. I wanted a *way* better solution for both Madoka and Homura.

I liked the ending because it was better than the alternative (everyone gets stuck in an endless cycle, etc).

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Or Homura breaks and the world (and maybe most of the neary galaxy) ends.

I did have fun before the finale imagining what wishes would solve this.
*Kyuubey's people never existed - 1) genocide 2) humans still in caves 3) universe still dies

*Homura never became a magical gir1 - 1) Homura most likely dies 2) Every magical girl from the first time line that died dies

*Magical girl project never came into being - 1) Humans still in caves 2) universe still dies or Kyuubey's people probably do something else fucked up

It was fun to guess, but most of the endings I thought of were much more depressing than the actual ending.

What were some endings other people thought of?

One of my friends didn't like it either, he said it was too happy of an ending, and just too deus ex machina I guess? I wasn't really paying that much attention to him because I like happy endings.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked it well enough. Didn't think it was brilliant and I doubt I'll ever watch it again, but it was a decent watch.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
What is this?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica or Magical Girl Madoka Magica. It's an anime series that came out in Japan last year. Think magical girl series where the source of the powers does not have your best interest in mind.

[personal profile] snowknife 2012-07-02 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
It is also called Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The point of the ending was there was no solution that would make everyone happy. So Madoka made the single selfless wish and sacrificed herself, quite literally.

And by the way, you seem to think Homura forgot. But she didn't--this is why she's able to tell Kyuubey everything and why she has the conversation with Madoka's family, going so far as to try and give the ribbons to Junko. Homura remembers everything, but she learned to stop living for someone else and to live for herself. What she had for Madoka? Was EXTREMELY unhealthy.

Wow really? I've seen a lot of people who disliked the ending, myself included. It wasn't the worst ending ever and I accept it as the happiest solution to the problem, but I still didn't like it.

Eh? I'm one of the people who loved the hell out of the ending. Let me see if I can explain why.

First of all, though this has already been addressed: Homura didn't forget Madoka, she just became not a sobbing wreck at the thought of not being able to interact with her much anymore.

Secondly: According to the stinger, Madoka can come and see Homura whenever she wants. Also! Madoka flat out explained this herself, when Homura's done fighting, she (like EVERY OTHER MAGICAL GIRL) gets to come live in Madoka's plane of existence forever. With all the other magical girls! This was flat-out explained. I'm not sure where you could have gotten the 'never see her again' thing from.

Thirdly: Madoka can totally interact with the world! She played with her little brother, and her mother even spotted her a time or two. Plus she gets to talk with every magical girl who vanishes and ease them into her realm. That's exactly what she wanted. She's made totally aware of the consequences of her wish and accepts it.

Fourthly: It wasn't even really cheap. They had been building up to it the whole show. Yeah, watching it the first time you're probably too stunned from each thing that happens to get it, but there's a lot of clues. The amount of power she has stored in her from Homura's time looping. How each thing that happens just seems to barely spare her from having to contract. Being told the history of the Incubators. Kyubey saying things like 'you could even become a god.' It was perfectly well hinted at.

Plus, due to Kyubey's speech to her on the history of their worlds, she knows she can't do something like just keep them from picking Earth (not to mention that would be selfish! She isn't selfish.) She knows she needs to change things so that the Incubators will not be devoted to sacrificing them. Which means she needs to unmake witches. Which leads to...her wish. She actually picked what I would consider the most rational wish, given the resources she had.

It was so incredibly awesome to see a series that not only has a resolution, but a resolution that actually fixes the problems with the world that can be fixed. Instead of so many other shows, wherein yes, the bad guy is defeated, but the problem could totally crop up again with a new villain because the world is still structured the same. It was a wonderful deconstruction of the genre, and I recommend the show to anyone who wants an anime along these lines to watch largely because of that.

...Sorry for the words and the tl;dr, I'm just trying to explain.

IA but for mainstream anime, it was like, an OK ending.

The interest in the ending for me was that it ended in a completely unexpected route from the beginning. It's still challenging a lot of genre issues and expectations, although once the "twist" happened it played out pretty expected.

They should have kissed. In terms of lesbian stuff, not that exciting. It was just a good story about female friendship/gays being badass IMO. Not the best thing since sliced bread, but a welcome break from what's been pretty shitty anime after pretty shitty anime in recent years, especially the ones that star female characters.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
How was it cheap? The ending was the best one for the thematic route it was going to. A downer ending was going to be cheap as well as a happy ending.

I like it because it validates everything the anime was getting at. It was pretty obvious this anime was about what Madoka will wish for and we know it was going to be something huge, especially we are constantly reminded that Madoka had the power to warp the universe due to Homura's timeline hopping. But we were clueless of how she was going to solve the problem.

Each magical girl was a lesson for her: Mami being the one who introduces to her to the whole of Magical Girls, Sayaka and Kyouko teaching her the dangers of making wishes that you are not prepared for and Homura to remind her the selfless dedication and courage to protect the ones.

And it was interesting with Kyubey baiting her, especially unloading the history of Magical Girls to make her wish out of desperation and despair so he can get her energy from her transformation into Krimhild Gretchen.

It wasn't a "cheap" ending or Deus Ex Machina ending that usually plague the Magical Girl genre (oh Sailor Moon and your cheap as hell deaths every season finale) because it satisfied every problem in that series: saving the Universe from Heat Death, protecting humanity's progress, and most importantly, saved the Magical Girls from a Fate Worse than Death and have their efforts be in vain (which was the reconstruction in this series).

Seriously, what will be a better ending that satisfied all of those and NOT look like it's cheap or a Deus Ex Machina and not violate the themes of this series?

Eh...the ending was okay, but the show in general was pretty bad imo. I'm dreading this year's Otakon because it's going to be Madoka Magicka themed, eurgh.

I just kind of hated how HUMANITY COULD NEVER HAVE DONE ANYTHING EVER without the magical girls. That made me eyeroll a bit, and probably contributed to my ultimate slight disappointment in the series. I guess I wish the ending had been cleverer or something.

You're not alone, anon. I know of a lot of people who didn't like the ending.

As for me, I actually liked the ending quite a bit better than everything that came before it. But I don't think it was brilliant or anything. It was definitely predictable, especially if you've watched a lot of magical girl shows before.

(And I'm one of those grumpy magical girl fans who has a knee-jerk "oh for fuck's sake!" reaction every time I see Madoka being praised for "deconstructing" the genre or being unpredictable/original in any way. This definitely isn't a criticism of the series itself, more of the [largely English-speaking] fandom reaction to it, but it certainly wasn't the first to do anything that it did, and frankly it played the genre tropes completely straight much more than it *~deconstructed~* anything. Especially the ending.)

No, you're not. I also feel like the only lesbian who isn't in love with Madoka/Homura and doesn't consider Homura to be this amazing love martyr either.
