There's not a lot of love for The Promise, though I found it okay - it was more interesting with the political stuff than the characters - but I never realized there were so many little spinoff/prequel books. I should find them.

I've never read what you prefer, but The Promise is such a poorly written mess of cliches that I'm just going to assume you're right.

Yeah, Zuko's story is surprisingly good, even if it uses the movie look of Zuko and Iroh.

I do find "The Promise" entertaining, but agree with pretty much all the criticism aimed at it.

wasn't zuko's story pretty much just made with the show in mind except for some of the visual design, anyway

I'm loving The Promise because I an just tickled at how well Gene Yang gets the voices of the characters down, and it's just nice to see the continued adventures of my favorite Gaang (sorry, didn't get into Korra). But as for a significant GN, I like Zuko's Story more--especially the fact that the authors kept it as true to the original canon as they could, while still making it a movie tie-in.

But I may be biased...

Yeah that pretty much sums up my feelings about The Promise. :3 I haven't read Zuko's Story, though, I was put off by the connections to the film - is it worth reading, then?

I'd say so. The authors & artist worked hard to stay as true to cartoon canon as they could (but the character designs of Zuko, Iroh, etc. had to fit with the movie, unfortunately). It works as a prequel to ATLA and shows a lot about Zuko's mindset before he went on his quest to find the Avatar. Some really great character development for both Zuko and Iroh. (Also, it has an Azula cameo, and since she isn't in the movie at all, she's completely in her cartoon glory.) The book explains things that occur in the cartoon and not the movie, like the origin of the Blue Spirit and the Air Temple guru. (I haven't seen the movie, but I assume it didn't mention any of those!)

The fact that Azula was drawn in her cartoon glory was what made me buy the book. If she hadn't been? I wouldn't have.

Seeing Zuko and Iroh drawn in movie!verse style was jarring... and disappointing... but the story itself was surprisingly well-done and thankfully took after the cartoon.

I might check it out, then! :)
The Blue Spirit is in the film, actually. For some reason. I'm not sure why he was included.

problem is, since it is a movie tie-in, I can't get "Oong Oong Oong" out of my head!

I enjoy the promise as well, all except for Zuko's decision to seek advice from his father of all people. I think it was a major deconstruction in Zuko's character to do that. What's wrong with Iroh?? That and all the "sweeties" from Katara and Aang.

Otherwise I think the writing is spot on, I swear I hear the character's voices while I read! :D The art is gorgeous as well!

lol I love the "oogies"! If only for how uncomfortable they make Sokka XD Though they are a bit gratuitous. I feel they were probably included like 5 times too often.

Indeed, I found Zuko's Story to just be better overall. Maybe it's because I was expecting less, it being a movie tie-in and all? But honestly I was quite surprised at how good it was. Simple, certainly, but pretty dang good for what it was.

Maybe I'm also biased because S!1 Zuko is my favorite, even if he looks like a weird hybrid of Cartoon!Zuko and Movie!Zuko.

Matsumoto's art is gorgeous. /nothing else to contribute to this thread

Well considering the story in The Promise is full of fuck and all character development from the series was thrown out the window (Aang agreeing to kill Zuko? What happened to Aang being against killing?), I have to agree with this.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think it was a matter of Aang (a) feeling put on the spot, and (b) knowing Zuko wouldn't ask unless he was that deathly afraid of becoming like his father.

The world did just get out of a war that left behind a generation of bitterness and distrust and Zuko managed to see up close the effects it had on people not in the Fire Nation.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
But what's with Zuko worrying about becoming like his father in the first place? The show did an exemplary job of showing how much he isn't like Ozai (and Azula, the child who did actually take after him). That part of the comic always bothered me and still does. It isn't something he needs to worry about... so why make something out of nothing and base an entire plot around it?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's one of things that keep me from reading it. The show went back and forth with Zuko (season 2 finale, anyone?) but in the end, he chose the right path. Sure, what he goes through might be something that could happen irl. BUT THIS ISN'T RL. From a literary perspective, he's redeemed, he's chosen the right path. Making him suddenly steer towards to wrong one again feels just cheap, frustrating and unnecessary.

The artwork is so fucking ugly in The Promise- I can't even-
